I grew up in the era of Super Mario Bros. My mom won a Nintendo gaming system when she was on Jeopardy — but that’s a whole ‘nother story. Point being, I grew up on directionals and A/B buttons. Which is why I’m hopeless at most games on normal video controllers these days. (And also why I’m excited at the prospect of Natal but, again, a whole other subject.)

I tell you all this because I have found that there are a few games that I can play. Aside from a steep learning curve on some racing games and button-mashing on fighting games, I like what are, I suppose, called adventure/role-playing games.

I’m not talking about WoW or things like that. Those just didn’t hold a lot of interest for me. But Knights of the Old Republic, Broken Sword and, the most recent, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. In these you play characters who have to find their way through a storyline. Along the way, they talk to people, pick up random items that come in useful later, etc. And, best of all, the controls are easy enough for the likes of me.

So. I finally got around to playing Dreamfall — which I’d been wanting for ages — and it was awesome. But yesterday I finished it up and two very disconcerting facts arose:

1. Cliffhanger endings. On a video game? Seriously? Do you know how long it can take to get the next chapter produced?!

2. I found out that Dreamfall itself is a sequel. I had apparently misunderstood/misremembered what I read, and the first game in the series is called The Longest Journey. Which explains why there were huge story lines that never got explained but…

I was still really annoyed with myself. Because I had done the research, yet I still ended up doing things bass-ackward, as some like to say.

That got me thinking: We do that a lot in life. Heck, we do that a lot in finances. We read up, we roll up our sleeves and we get to work… only to find out that we’ve gone about things completely the wrong way.

So, let’s share some times we all went about things in the wrong order.
