Still diligently applying, Tim got a response that amused us both.

It congratulated him on receiving a tentative offer of employment with Miller Brewing Company. Sounds great, right?

All the applicant had to do was send a copy of his credit report to the company. Oh, and this offer expired in 72 hours.

What particularly amused me was that this contact for Miller was using an email that ended in “coachleather-usa.com.”

But obviously the real alarm-sounder here was that any copy would ask for you to supply your credit report.

Still, there are a lot of desperate people out there these days. I wonder how many will follow through without thinking, just because it sounds like the answer to their prayers.

Have any of you heard about something like this? People preying on the desperation of the unemployed?

I have my resume posted on craigslist and I get scams sent to that email every day. Usually they're from outside the US, and the person is trying to get bank account info. They don't always ask this directly. At first they try to establish contact and then they will get more involved in it if they see they have an opportunity. They come up with all sorts of odd proposals. One giveaway is often they can't spell, or use proper grammar. Or there is no mention of their location or yours. There are also other less illegal scams, where they will ask you to pay a fee for a job opportunity or pay for a job search and that sort of thing. Yeah it 's definitely a way of business for some people these days, trying to siphon a few bucks off the job searchers.

I got the same e-mail today, actually, only they were hiding behind the Coach Leather brand name instead of Miller Brewing Co. I Googled the e-mail address it was sent from and it brought me to this page. I bet a lot of people would fall for this scam.. I was definitely excited at first! And then reality kicked in.

Just recieved this scam today, It was sent from the "melody.fisher@millerbrewing-usa.com" asking for the credit score. I thought that was fishy when they would ask that, so I looked up scams. On top of that going to the miller site, there was no miller company even in the state I live in. Interesting.

Once again, same e-mail today. I had responded to an Office Administration Position on Craigslist. I was happy to see that I had a response today. It was from a Stephanie Meyers, with Reebok USA. I first got suspicious when the e-mail address was for a lisa washington with coachleather-usa. Then I saw the credit report part. I searcher Reebok to find there wasn't a location in the area that would necessitate and admin position. Searched the main website for the listed place to get the credit report to find it was a blog site. Finally searched the e-mail and wound up here. I hope the other people to get these e-mails are smart enough to check it out. (And the scammers need to realize anyone would be suspicious of a secretary job that starts out at 22/hour with no experience needed.)

I received the e-mail from Stephanie meyers and what tipped me off was the link for the credit report. I copied it and googled it and ended up at a blog site. After looking closely at the sender-I noticed two different names including the Lisa.Washington@coachleather-usa.com. I put in the coachleather-usa.com and it said forbidden zone. Then I clicked the links on that forbidden page and it explained that it was a Microsoft Frontpad web page creation site. Then I googled coachleather-usa.com again and now I am here. Remember if it sounds too good to be true…especially when I never applied to Reebok.

My daughter got the same email from Stephanie Myers with the email address for lisa.washington. Thankfully she asked me if it was normal to have to provide a credit report to a company when applying for a job and I was able to stop her before it went any further.
She also got an email about a Personal Assistant job and the guy was out of the country and was going to send her a check to buy some supplies for an orphanage. After checking that one out, it was also a scam. Beware of any jobs where they want you to put a check or money order in your bank account and then wire money to another location. The checks are fraudulent and will not clear and you will be responsible for the entire amount of the check plus the bounced check charges.

I knew instantly if was a scam because no company, anywhere will ask you to email them a copy of your credit report. I worked in HR and the normal process is a phone interview, face to face interview (maybe 2-3) depends on company, then Human Resources runs your background check; and the majority of the time it doesn't include a credit check at all unless you are applying for certain positions that require you to be involved on the financial end such as working in a bank or accounting; something like that. Again NO Legitimate company asks for your personal information like that at all. It makes me angry because this is all a waste of time for job seekers really needing the work and all the scams are ridiculous!

Yep, I, got the very same email from Michelle Croft at 4:00 this morning. I'd answered a Craigslist ad for a Receptionist / Office Assistant (Downtown Austin) position. Curious about the request for a credit report, I, too, googled Reebok USA, Inc. and found this website, thank goodness. I also looked at the Reebok website and searched for jobs in Texas — the only thing that popped up was a position in Dallas. I should know better, applying for a blind, generalized ad. (I loved the "As you know" part of the letter — actually, no, I didn't know about the benefits, and as a matter of fact, I had no idea I was applying to Reebok, as none of this was listed in the want-ad.) (I also loved the highly personal "Dear Applicant".)

And I've also received the emails about a Personal Assistant job and the guy was out of the country and was going to send me a check to ship refurbished electronics to clients. I'd heard about that scam before, but I hadn't actually seen it yet. Guess it's true what they say: if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Like others have said Craigslist is full of nefarious activity. I have gotten jobs and apartments (school) through Craigslist before but this nonsense.

HI,

I also just received a email and I was not sure what to do. I dont want to do the free credit report but this guy does have an email that is (@reebok-usa.com) so im not sure what to think of this one.

Dear Applicant:

Congratulations, this is a tentative offer of employment for the available administrative position with Reebok USA, Inc.

Hi Rick,
Trust me, its a scam. Companies that require a credit check get it for themselves. If it were legitimate, they'd be more concerned with you cheating because if you send it, it could be altered. Besides, you NEVER give any company anything personal until you can verify who they are. They're just trying to get people's personal information so that they can steal your identity.

I just received this email this morning and was dumb enough to rush and submit my credit report. What's going to happen? What type of information can be disrupted from me sending it? I sent the part with my name and address attached to the credit score…I feel so dumb. Craigslist is seriously getting on my nerves. I'm not using that website anymore. I hope and pray nothing bad happens. I knew something was wrong but I was so dumb and desparate that I went with it since it said REEBOK lol…this is bull.

Hi Arielle,
If I were you, I would contact my bank immediately and advise them that someone may have gotten your credit report in error. The people doing this are more than likely using this scam for identity theft. If they have your credit report, they have all of the information they need to obtain credit cards, get duplicates of your credit cards sent to them, open accounts, hell, they could even buy a car with that much information on you. Please, take immediate action to warn all of your creditors, and your bank that there is a potential threat of identity theft.
In the future remember this; if you haven't applied for a job there, it's not likely that the company is going to contact you. Any company that asks you for personal information about your credit without even having talked to you, its not legit, and last but not least, before you apply online for any job, unless you go to that company's website google the company to see if there is any information on it, or go to the BBB ( Better Business Bureau) to see if there have been any complaints filed.

There's another one from Goldfinch Management Group also. It's for the Mailing Assistant (Clerk) position. They want you to receive packages at your house, inspect them, and send them to specified addresses with pre-paid labels. They say you get $35 for each package you send out., which means your pay would be $1400 a month and $350 a week. I received that email last week then I googled it and found a blog warning people about it. They had a website in the email and everything, and it looks legit. Be careful. No more craigslist for me lol…

It's difficult enough finding a job without these scams. At least she had the email address and her name in the body of the email jive. But that's the only thing that was right in the whole thing.

Like above poster, I received a similar e-mail from “Hurley USA”. Promised an entry-level packaging job in a warehouse for $16/hour (yeah right, there’s your first clue) Posting here so hopefully people doing Google searches will find this site faster and realize it’s a scam. I had to do a little hunting.

If you use the website:
http://who.is

And enter in the website of the supposed company:
http://www.hurley-usa.com/

You can see that the website was created last week on August 4′th by a guy named “Jamee Schiffer”. For all the “names” people get in their e-mails from Reebok, Crown Royal etc., I’m curious if Jamee Schiffer is the actual person behind this scam since I’d assume you have to use a valid name to be able to register a domain name for a website.

Anyway, hope nobody fell for this.
