I’ve finally found a little time to take a peek at Black Friday ads. I have to say, there isn’t much that thrills me.
I’ll probably check for reviews Best Buy’s tv wall mounts, since Tim is hoping to have our set on the wall before the new year. And there is a movie or two that I might pick up on the cheap — an aunt really enjoyed the Harry Potter series, and Death Hallows II is $6.99 as a Best Buy doorbuster.
But we have most of what we need, really. There are some tempting deals on TVs, but thanks to a car problem, we’re out $800. So that nixed any ideas about getting a fancy-schmancy set for the bedroom.
So, I keep scrolling through the leaked ads to see if anything leaps out at me as a great present — to give or to ask for. So far, nada. Unless, of course, I want a donut maker.
This seems to be the new, random item of the year. I suppose the “Baby Pops” maker I saw was actually more random, but that one has only been seen once. The donut maker is practically ubiquitous. Even Best Buy — BEST BUY! — is selling one on Black Friday.
Did we all turn into Homer Simpson when I wasn’t looking? Are donuts going to be the new currency in the new world order?
When it comes to weird cooking gadgets, Tim and I have always been pretty level headed. Even when we were registering, we never even considered an ice cream maker. We knew we’d never use it. So I’m always a little puzzled by people who buy things like donut makers.
I don’t care how cheap it is, it’s not a good deal. I’ve yet to find anyone who actually consistently uses those things. Or anyone who uses the things more than a couple of times. Ever.
I find the litmus test is to go on Craigslist and see all of the people who also thought they’d use a particular gadget. And now want it out of their house.
So, no donut makers in my future. Hopefully none of your futures, either.
A smoothie machine? Now that’s the ticket…

It seems like these odd cluttery kitchen gadgets always appear at this time of year. I think I recall a cupcake making kit thingy that was all over the stores last year??
I don't think there are very many people who would actually buy *themselves* a donut maker, but there must be enough desperate shoppers who think it would be a fun gift for a hard-to-buy-for relative or friend.

Deedee,
That's an excellent point: "Oh Mary LOVES ice cream/donuts/cake pops! I bet she'd love making that at home!"
It's one of those gifts that keeps on giving — giving up your space in the closet. Or you re-gift it to some other hapless friend/relative.
