The lotion that works so well for Tim’s skin — Philosophy’s When Hope is Not Enough with omega oils that soothe his dermis — has been discontinued.

I called a local Philosophy retail store to get their advice on how shelf stable the stuff was. The lady (who also bemoaned the loss of that product) said their stuff was generally intended for no more than one year.

So we bought a year’s worth of the stuff. All at once.

I found the best price at the DermStore: $27.50 per bottle (down from $35).

Mr. Rebates had a 10% off coupon, plus we’ll get 10% cash back — plus 20% of Tim’s rebate since I referred him.

Even with all that, it will be about $588.

To be fair, that’s just over $11 per week. And there’s that whole Itching-Over-Every-Square-Inch-Of-His-Body-Yes-Even-When-He’s-Sleeping thing. So I’m willing to pay for quality.

I just wasn’t really planning to pay it all at once.

I’m off to wait for the next — not “other,” next — shoe to drop. Preferably not on our heads… or wallets.

Check for Philosophy on QVC, I know they sell it, and maybe they will still have the kind you need.

Dear Abigail,
I too suffered for almost 20 hellish years with atopic dermatitis over every inch of my body. It was debilitating and caused me to suffer from severe depression for many years. On top of that, most people would simply roll their eyes at my condition and say, "Gee, what's the big deal. It's only a rash.".

I know how frustrating it can get when people who don't know anything about the condition keep suggesting simplistic remedies, but I would like to let you know about the treatment that finally set me free from years of misery. A very prominent dermatologist put me on immunosuppressants. Currently I am on Immuran which started out being several hundred dollars a month. Fortunately, it now comes in a generic and is quite inexpensive since it is one of the older immunosuppressants. I don't know what specific condition your husband has but it might be worth your time to speak to a good dermatologist about the possibility of using them. They have potential side effects, but for me they have been a godsend. Good, Luck.

Hi Abigail,

I have severe eczema and have all my life. I am currently have good luck with Cavilon lotion – which is mostly available online, but not horribly priced ($12-15 for a 16 oz bottle). If you like, I would be happy to send you a bottle and Tim can try it. It goes on a bit greasy, but then absorbs within a couple of minutes and feels great. I first tried it in the doctor's office and found it to be nonirritating and soothing. I have tried every expensive cream out there and found this one to be best for my body. It just plain doesn't hurt, doesn't feel heavy, and doesn't "peel" off. Also, my adult son has good luck with the Philosophy sensitive skin line for his face.

Please know, I am in no way affiliated with the company…just wanted to mention that I will not be profiting off you in anyway.

More….I looked on Amazon and they carry it. You can put it on a Wish list and I can purchase it for you – that way no addresses need change hands. I do realize this is the internet and I am a complete stranger to you! Thanks Susan

It may seem odd, but I found a product that I loved called Mama Mio. It's actually a series of prenatal products, but they're based on Omegas because when ladies are pregnant the baby take all the omega's out of the mom leading to pregnancy eczema and more. There's a body wash, oil, creme, and really thick oil. It's the only thing that kept my skin together when we lived in Vegas. However, my mother-in-law gave me an odd look when she came to visit.

I normally read your blog, but haven't commented much. I can't help myself this time. I really can't get enough of this stuff. The tea tree and neem bar has gotten rid of my acne and keratosis pilaris. My sister also uses the aloe, aloe, aloe soap on my nephew for his eczema. The sample bars are $2.60 and about the size of normal soap bars. The regular bars are huge and last for a long time. The creams, salves, and bar lotions are also amazing. (whipped shea is really fantastic). Everything is natural and many of her ingredients are certified organic . The options can be a little overwhelming, but reading the reviews on the site really help. It's not very expensive to order a few samples and try it out. I love the Philosophy products too…but this is so much cheaper and the ingredients list is MUCH easier to read. It's amazing how limiting the number of chemicals that come in contact with your skin can really make such a difference!

I know you're all stocked up with the Philosophy lotion, but I read this post and thought of you and Tim: http://jezebel.com/5895309/worth-it-one-lotion-to…

It might provide a nice alternative when the Philosophy stuff is gone.
