First off, why is Tide soooo much more expensive than All? Seriously.

More importantly, Tide touts its “coldwater” variety. But from what I understand, you can pretty much use cold water with any laundry detergent.

I want to be sure there’s really no difference, since Tim’s skin is so sensitive. So if anyone has any feedback, I’d love to hear it.

I promise, I’m working up to the post explaining where I’ve been emotionally this past week or so.

No idea about cold water Tide, but I make our own laundry detergent for use on everything but cloth diapers and use all natural Rockin' Green on those. We run cold water for all loads except sheets, towels and cloth diapers and have no problems. You may want to check into something completely natural as my skin is very sensitive and it has done wonders for me, especially with the hard water here in Az.

Christina,

Sounds interesting. What are some good sites for homemade laundry recipes?

I make my own too. And i used it on clotth diapers.. my skin is a mess (eczema, psorasis, sebborhea, contact dermititus) (sorryabt spelling on a nook tablet) and havent had any problems. I bet that einsing Tim’s cloths twice would solve any problems. (Tide with any scent at alll makes me breakout.)

cRol,

Sounds like you definitely know about skin issues. We always use the free & clear stuff, but if you can direct me to a good homemade laundry soap recipe, I'll look into it.

At some point I've tried pretty much every detergent on the market – I buy whatever's on sale that I have a coupon for – and they all seem to do pretty much the same job in cold water.

We buy Ecos from Costco, and so far, so good. My fiance's father uses the Costco generic Free and Clear and he has sensitive skin too– seems to work fine.

I use the simple dollar recipe for laundry detergent borax washing soda and feels naphtha soap. It works like any other. Check old consumer reports, they said cold water Tide isn't worth it.

My husband's dermatologist suggested using All Free & Clear. Costco's Free & Clear has worked also. With Costco's coupons one or the other is cheaper. Plus my usual Costco doesn't always have the All Free & Clear.

My grandmother has the most sensitive skin along with a host of other health issues and she won't use anything but All Free & Clear. Also, look at the ingredients. Even Free & Clear detergents can have enzymes and optical brighteners. Yes, they make the clothes look better, but they also can cause rashes in some people with very sensitive skin. We use Country Save but I do have to be more vigilante about dealing with stains immediately since there are no enzymes and sometimes I use Oxyclean on my whites since the detergent has no optical brighteners.

We make our own liquid soap (we use it for laundry, and a general cleaner) out of soap nuts. I get a big bag from Sears (in Canada – not sure if they stock it in the States) and make batches of soap as needed. You just take a big pot, throw a few handfuls of nuts in, add water, then boil down. It suds' and cleans as well as anything else, but it's all natural with no dyes, perfumes, or chemicals. It's actually recommended to be used as a body wash, hand soap, shampoo for people with sensitive skin or skin issues.

I’ve been using a non traditional product for my laundry for 20 yrs. Son had very sensitive skin, tried just about everything, triple rinsed, you name it. Saw “Wash It Plus Laundry Balls” on QVC. I love them. They affect the molecular charge of the water, so the dirt comes off the fabric. I admit that I will use bleach or a brightening detergent every 6 months or so, but other than that, 20 full years of using these. I have NO connection with this company or anything like that. I just LOVE them. Here’s the manufacturers website http://www.shopdepalma.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=40
But you should be able to find them on eBay. QVC no longer carries them.

I will also say that sensitive skin son wore disposable diapers only, but all his other laundry and all family laundry has been washed using these laundry balls – for 20 yrs. Not the same set, of course…they last a long time, but not THAT long. ;-) And yes, our clothes look and smell very clean.

I have skin allergies and have actually had issues with the name brand perfume/dye free stuff. I started buying my hippie Planet detergent and just wash everything in cold water. The cold doesn't make a difference as long as you dissolve the powder in the water completely. We actually turned off the hot water to the washer two years ago. No problems and no more itching irritated skin either. P.S. I also use the perfume/dye free fabric softener but if you're really worried about it, you can use vinegar in your rinse cycle during the wash.

I am using some Tide right now I got on sale for free (after store rebate) a while back. It smells nice, has a silly orange color, but doesn't seem to work any different from anything else. If it's not close to free, it's not for me. It's all hype. I use any brand that's on sale.

Because of severe allergies to scent ( it's not even necessairly that it smells badly, it's the fact that it smells, period) I buy the "FREE and/or CLEAR" version of detergent. I can get ALL and/or PUREX for far less than Tide, which I don't like to begin with.
