Christmas is coming, regardless of the goose’s weight gain.
Back in late August, we went to a Cracker Barrel and found Halloween items galore. That was bad enough, but I spied a Christmas tree and a few other items tucked in an inconspicuous corner.
Ugh.
Let’s not forget that every year the Black Friday sales get earlier and earlier. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start mixing in with ads for Halloween costumes this year.
So if you aren’t one of those people who puts away money all year, I guess it’s time to start socking away those funds.
And Daily Worth is offering to help.
It’s getting people to pledge to save $500. Then it will pick two people and double (up to $500) the amount saved.
Some of you are already dismissing this out of hand. Here’s why you shouldn’t:
From the Terms and Conditions of the contest: “Approximate retail value (“ARV”): up to $500. Total ARV of all prizes: up to $1,000.”
Note the words “up to.” As in, it may not be a full $500 because, say, there isn’t the full $500 in the account.
In other words, just do your best.
They’ll double whatever you have in there. (Well, assuming that you don’t save more than $500. And if you save more than $500 in 8 weeks… Good for you, but I may actually actively dislike you. Okay, not really… Well, maybe a little.
Seriously, the idea of an extra $500 is great. But that’s a lot in two months. To be exact, it’s $62.50 a week. Or $9 a day.
That’s significant.
It’s more than the anecdotal daily latte PF experts tell you to give up.
It’s more than a meal at most fast food places. And does anyone here eat 7 fast food meals a week on a regular basis? (Tim would if he had his druthers, but he doesn’t so he doesn’t.)
So, maybe you’ll save $300 or $20o. Heck, maybe you can only spare $10 a week. But if you win, you’ll still double it. And if you have to struggle to put aside $10 a week… Well, then it’ll be huge for you!
Of course, only two people will win the prize. But the rest of us will have put more money aside, and that’s still a form of winning. One which doesn’t involve free money, but dammit I’m trying to be positive here.
What could you cut so you could come up with some serious cash in 8 weeks?

I could cut back to bare-bones basic cable and stop eating out, period. Wouldn't want to do it, but I could if I had to. Besides, my lifestyle is already pretty spartan out of necessity.

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest going much further than you already are, apparently. On the other hand… Do you already put money away each month or week? If so, create a new account (somewhere free like ING) and just siphon some (or all) of that money into the new account.

I like this because although $60+ a week is a pretty hard goal for me, it does make $25/week seem a lot more reachable.
