About three weeks ago, we discovered a leak in one of the leads to the toilet in our bathroom. I turned off the water and figured we’d just replace the toilet soon.
Since then, we’ve had intermittent bad smells in the bathroom. My grandfather thought he smelled methane, which seemed about right. So we called a plumber.
Two minutes of listening to me, and the plumber said the problem was no water in the toilet bowl. Gas got pushed up and… yeah. Did I mention the initial hour is $125?
Rather than pay $62 a minute for his diagnosis, I decided to have him just install the toilet, which takes an hour or less. We may have to pay a little more since he’s currently out getting the thing. But at least the $125 is going toward something other than making me feel short-sighted.
And it’ll be an item to check off the list.
Meanwhile, my grandfather, assisted by Tim, has just finished installing two ceiling fans for us. He also installed switches to be able to just shut the fan off.
Apparently, the other one died because of the battery, not the motor. And by the battery I mean that the damn thing had melted. I swear the previous owner’s DIY projects are going to be the death of us.
The upshot is that we now have two far more attractive ceiling fans in the living and dining rooms. We chose one with dome lights instead of those hanging bulbs. Those inevitably create glare on the TV screen, plus they shine in my eyes, no matter where I sit. I prefer to watch TV without feeling like an interrogation victim in a 1940s cop movie.
Meanwhile, within the next three hours, we’ll have duct cleaners and landscapers descend upon us.
Having a yard free of weeds and sprayed down with weed control will be big. It’s just unsightly and stresses me out.
The duct cleaning will be a big help. As some of you recall, we messed up pretty badly on the A/C front. Getting everything cleared out will hopefully help efficiency. It may even help with Tim’s asthma during allergy season.
Point being, by the time we take off for the hotel, the house will be vastly improved.
