Okay, so the home repair was completed in the middle of last week; the appraisal was done on Friday. Which means the refi loan has been conditionally approved after we send in some paperwork.
Oh, and yeah we’re in collections for $841. News to me!
Turns out our old apartment complex decided we were on the hook for some repairs, like a new carpet. (Somehow in only two years, we managed to make a new carpet pretty raggedy.) And despite the fact that we kept the same phone number and (I’m like 99.99% sure) gave them our forwarding address, the complex decided not to, ya know, contact us. Instead, it apparently hired a collections company. But didn’t, ya know, give it our phone number or any other form of contact.
We’re getting tight on time, so I just decided to pay it. The collections agency knocked 25% off. I tried to bargain it down, but the agency doesn’t own the loan. So 25% was the best it could do. At least that amount took care of the interest/upcharge from it being in collections for two years.
Yet another reason we should all check our credit reports yearly. Not that I do (obviously), but let mine be a cautionary tale.
I’m annoyed, but apparently we owe the money. My main objection is the $150 they charged us to take care of an infestation. That place was riddled with roaches pretty early on. Some of it was the fact that we aren’t great about keeping up on dishes. But it didn’t help that the yearly bug bombing was voluntary. So bugs could just huddle up in other, not-being-bombed apartments and then mosey on back. We had people come in three times in two years, and within a week of each the roaches were back. And a little snarky.
Point being, it was a (mostly) valid debt, so I don’t get to feel too cheated. Except on my credit report. I’ll look into getting the management company to write a letter to the credit bureaus as to why it ended up in collections, but I have no idea whether I’ll have any follow-through on that one.
I also discovered that I forgot (read: didn’t know) to change my company’s address when we moved. That may be an issue that needs to get taken care of before the 28th.
Other than that, I have Sears coming over tomorrow to check the A/C unit before the bad weather hits. I’ll also be picking their brains about the over/under unit issue. Home Depot will come by on the 25th so I can get one last quote about insulation installation. Then we can get the various leaks sealed and insulation put in.
Oh, and now I can’t get my printer to work. I finally got the light to stop blinking — by inserting and removing and jiggling ink cartridges multiple times — and now the computer doesn’t see it as installed. Which wouldn’t be as big a deal except I still haven’t been able to print out my voucher to mail my Arizona quarter one estimated taxes.
Never a dull moment. I may keep an eye out for shooting stars so I can wish for one.
