We found a stream of water coming from the water heater on Friday. The water appeared to be dripping from the drain valve, so I tightened it about an 1/8 turn and prayed that was the issue.
The unit is about nine years old, so it’s not really a shock. But I had hoped it would be one of the ones that lasts closer to 15 years.
Instead, we have the plumber coming by tomorrow to replace it. The appointment setter said that we’d probably be looking at $650 including haul away of the old unit. Meanwhile, we have a garbage disposal that hasn’t worked since we’ve been in the house. It’s never been a big deal, but that side of the sink has started running slooooooowly. The plumber who installed our dishwasher opined that a new disposal would help.
And the guest house kitchen sink has been leaky for some time. But they were happy just putting a tub underneath it for quite awhile. And being my overstressed, distracted self, I just put it off. Now at least we’re getting everything done in one fell swoop.
The disposal will be $105. (Yes, we still have Home Depot gift cards, but we’re pretty flat these days. I don’t think we’ll actually be able to go get one ourselves before Wednesday at 2 p.m.) So I’m bracing myself for an $800-900 bill. Whee.
Don’t forget that this will be on the same credit card statement as the fabulous new dishwasher. But this is why we have savings/an emergency fund. She said, trying to soothe herself.
I guess it’s a good thing I still have those extra hours I can work. Granted, these days I’m actually busy almost every minute of my eight-hour workday; so I’m gonna feel the overtime more. But I’ll just keep picturing the credit card statement every time I get discouraged.
It’s times like this that I wish I still ate candy. Technically, Tim no longer cares if I break. He just wanted me to do it while the worst of his cravings were around. But I keep picturing the severe gastrointestinal distress I’ll suffer when I go back. It’s keeping me honest. For now.
Someone go eat some mint M&Ms or a Cinnabon for me.
