Blech. I think that about covers it all. Too much stuff to do, too little blog inspiration. So hopefully you’ll forgive this being more of an update post than an insightful one.
First up on the not-so-fun agenda was haggling with the yard guy on Tuesday.
Two months ago, he came out to do the front yard and offered to do both back and front for $175. Then $150 when I said no. I told him we’d call him separately for the backyard, and he did warn us it’d be more for a separate trip.
But I nearly laughed when he came out this week and said $175. Um… what?!
He offered to lower it to $150, but I had been planning to pay $100. It can’t be more than 300 square feet back there, and the weeds are mainly staying in patches at this point.
So then he offered to bring it down to $120, but at that point I was annoyed that he had that much wiggle room in the first place. I Felt jerked around.
When I politely turned him down and thanked him for his time, he agreed to $100. Which should’ve made me happy, but then he tried to explain.
First, he said it was only because he’d already spent the gas to get him and his guys to us from the east valley. That’s maybe 30 miles away; gas is $1.95 a gallon. So if it were really that big a screw job, he’d have eaten the cost of the gas and gone with someone less miserly.
Second, and what truly pissed me off, he said that the money wouldn’t even cover the cost of chemicals. How stupid does he think I am?! Two months ago, he thought he could turn a profit on both front and back for $150. Meaning that, even if he meant “chemicals and labor” he’s still completely full of crap.
So I guess what I’m trying to say is that the yard’s done, but we won’t be calling him again.
All this means that dentistry was actually the least upsetting stuff to deal with today. I had to get a filling redone, but the procedure was mostly painless and pretty quick, plus the co-pay was only $59.
The weird/distracting part came afterward, when the dentist advised me to stay on soft foods for 48 hours. And to try not to chew on the left side of my mouth during that time.
It could be that I misheard her, and she actually said four to eight hours. But I’m going to err on the side of caution.
This gave me an excuse to reconnect with my long-lost, simple carb love of spaghetti. Unfortunately, despite being delicious, spaghetti does not keep you full for long. I foresee a lot of spoons full of peanut butter today.
I did, however, pick up some ice cream along with the spaghetti. We’re having some fun times together, but I can’t help but be annoyed that this “soft foods” thing is vastly cutting into my remaining mint M&Ms consumption time.
I’ll be going back off sugary stuff at the beginning of the year. Tim suggested I choose that to just make it a clean break. And since it meant more candy, I agreed.
But as much as I’m enjoying the sugar, I’m also nearly constantly reminded that I feel better off of it. Blood sugar crashes mean I’m grouchier, more emotional and more tired than normal. It’s a good thing to keep in mind starting January 1st.
Meanwhile, I’m getting more paranoid about the candy consumption as I struggle to get back into a regular exercise routine. I was doing pretty well until a few weeks ago when a cold lasted around a week and a half, and a lingering cough stuck around another week or so.
Since then, my regimen has been spotty, though I’m doing remarkably well at not getting down on myself for it. My main concern right now, besides making sure the workouts happen, is making sure I’m doing all the ones.
See, I’ve been great about going back to the walking videos. In fact, I’m now consistently doing three-mile ones. Which are increasingly unabashed aerobics.
I’m even pretty good about doing my arm workouts. But I keep finding excuses not to do the leg videos because… squats. But I have a renewed conviction now that I’m losing some of the definition in my quads.
My legs are usually one of the first things to get weak. (Which makes sense, since they were paralyzed the longest.) So I need to keep my legs as strong as possible to keep my stamina up.
What annoyances/distractions have cropped up lately in your life? Have you ever had problems with yard service prices?
