Last night I was messaging back and forth with my blogger friend Revanche, complaining that I had no inspiration for a post. That nothing had surprised us recently that either needed complaining about or introspection on.
About 45 minutes later, Tim’s dad came to the door. Apparently, his brother had been shot five times.
We went over to the guest house, and Tim and I took turns holding Nadine while she sobbed for a bit. Then I called a couple of airlines to see if they had medical emergency fares. (For future reference, Southwest and United don’t. Delta does.)
In the end, Nadine just paid an $85 change fee to leave today. They were due to leave for a visit on Tuesday. Marc will keep his ticket as is.
Before you go rushing to console us: Tim and I are unaffected personally — other than that we’re upset over his parents’ distress.
I’ve mentioned our feelings toward Matt before.Nadine occasionally reads this blog, so I won’t get too far into details, given her current emotional condition righ. Suffice it to Matt has a very checkered past and has hung around/pissed off a lot of less-than-savory people in his time.
Reports are that Matt has turned his life around. But those come from his parents — who have always had rose-colored glasses in his regard — and friends who were always quick to forgive/see the best in him. So it’s hard to know how much credence to give the updates. Certainly, what few interactions we’ve overheard didn’t give us much hope.
And of course, even if he did change his life around… That doesn’t mean the karma/actions of his past can’t come back to haunt him.
I spoke with Nadine a few minutes ago. The update is:
- He was actually shot twice
- One bullet went in his leg
- One through and through going in his side and out his liver
- Some of his intestine had to be removed, liver bleeding stopped
- They’ve put off the second surgery while they wait for some swelling to go down
- They estimate another 2-3 surgeries will be necessary
- It will, according to the doctors, be a long recovery
I’m sorry that this is so awful for his parents, I really am. As for the rest… Well, you’d just have to meet Matt to understand, I guess. Or hear stories that I’m not going to throw out there because, while unlikely given everything going on, Nadine might read this post.
For his parents’ sake, I hope everything turns out okay. I assume that at this point, barring something going horribly wrong in one of the surgeries, he’ll pull through just fine.
I promise to have something more substantive soon. I’m doing some guest posts for publicity for my book, and that’s got me stressed out and lacking ideas for posts.
