I’m not bummed about turning a year older, though after a certain point you get startled that you’re no longer in your early 30s. Probably starting after 35.
So no, not bummed. Just… meh.
It’s probably just being so crazed what with Tim’s recent struggles and the new puppy. Not to mention that we had a slew of appointments last week. I could blame overtime too, but really email volumes have been a joke. So it’s probably just all that other stuff.
I guess I’m just too distracted by life in general to feel inspired about birthday activities. In the past, we’ve gone to water parks. Normally fun, but the crowds make it less so. As do the fact that, even with Groupon deals for entry/soda, the costs add up: parking, locker, food, etc.
Last year’s mini golf was a tad disappointing. The course wasn’t all that well kept up. Though since it’ll “only” be 102, putt-putt always a good fallback.
We’ll probably go see a movie, maybe Star Trek Beyond or maybe we’ll just enjoy the awfulness of Suicide Squad. Either way, a My Coke Rewards certificate means free tickets, free drinks and free popcorn.
Normally, we’d go to dinner too. But Tim’s teeth situation means he can’t eat much of anything.
And of course, there’s a junk food. Free IHOP breakfast, free water ice, maybe a DQ Blizzard (BOGO) if I feel so inclined. And almost definitely an obscenely large slice of chocolate cake from The Cheesecake Factory per tradition.
But even the prospect of junk food isn’t as exciting as last year. I’m not off sugar this year, so it’s not as huge a treat. Though with the FinCon diet it’s still something of a treat. Still, no a huge buildup, I’m afraid.
Maybe that’s why I got myself a present this year. (Poor Tim. He always wants to get me something, and every year I tell him not to.)
In my defense, I did tell him last year that I wanted Toothless — ya know, the real one from the movie. Alas, Tim is unable to fulfill impossible requests. So this year I broke down and got the closest thing: the plush version via Build-A-Bear workshop.
I used a discounted GC from Raise and a BOGO sale to get two, $25 dolls for just under $20. I’ll donate the second one at Christmas. #rationalization
So I now have an adorable stuffed Toothless, currently chilling out in the guest room to keep safe from the teething puppy. Still, he’s very cute and huggable. I can’t ride him around town, mind you. But hey, nobody’s perfect.
So yeah, birthday plans are holding at a steady shoulder-shrug. I’m sure I’ll have some fun, but at the moment I’m just trying to make it through the various chores/errands/appointments/puppy piddles.
What do you guys do for your birthdays?
