As I said in a recent post, I’m going to start keeping a spending diary to get a better sense of where my weekly funds are going and how much I’m spending every seven days. (At present, I take out $280 and see how long it lasts me, so I don’t currently have a great sense of how much is being spent each week.) Here’s a peek into my spending and days in general, if you care:
Friday: It was a relatively quiet day, though that evening I had a game night with friends. During the day I worked, exercised and then ran out to the store to get the last couple of things for game night.
I had to fill up the car ($32.49) at Circle K, and at the grocery store I picked up some strawberries (as one of the party snacks) and limes (for drinks) for game night. I also picked up some juice for the party I was attending the following day. The grocery bill was $8.71.
Total spent: $41.20
As a side note, the total spent for game night was $37.47 (included in that was the strawberries, limes, three cheeses, three boxes of crackers and two packs of ginger beer). That’s not a lot cheaper than going out drinking with friends, which concerns me. In the end, people brought a veritable crap-ton of snacks and drinks with them, so next time I’m going to put less pressure on myself to provide food/drink, which should lower the cost.
Saturday: Worked on the blog, worked (I’d taken on weekend overtime), exercised and snacked on game night leftovers. Once I was off work at 7 p.m., I took an Uber to a party for $10.51 including a $3 tip. I got a ride back home, circumventing a probably $12 Uber return trip.
Total spent: $10.51
Sunday: No spend day! I was tired from the night before, so I just chilled out at home, laid down for a while after initially catching up on emails, worked on the blog, watched Supernatural on Netflix, and ate some of the remaining cheese/crackers/hummus.
Total spent: $0
Monday: It was a quiet day at work. I took care of the few emails that came in and worked on the blog a bit. In the evening I had a date downtown. It involved drinks at a bar-arcade (yes, that’s a thing here), so I Ubered to the bar for $20.10 after tip. He drove me home, so no return Uber was needed.
For the record, I kicked his ass at Galaga, pinball and two of our three games of Street Fighter (go Chun Li!). But he was a good sport about it.
Total spent: $20.10
Tuesday: Banfield pet plan ($36.95) hit the credit card. This comes out of my weekly funds, so I transferred the money out of the account.
I washed some sheets, so $1.50 went into my washer/dryer fund.
In the late morning I had a dental cleaning. Unfortunately, I don’t have dental insurance, so the entire $129 went onto the card. It was too much to take out of my weekly funds.
I had to pick up a prescription, which ended up being filled as a three-month supply and was therefore $111, which meant I couldn’t afford to take it out of the weekly spending either. Grrrrr.
I was sleep-deprived because the date the night before ran late. Sleep deprivation makes me crave takeout/lowers my resistance to urges, so I got an $8.91 meal.
I’ve been considering a pedicure to deal with rough feet (from wandering around barefoot on tile). Vaseline and socks didn’t do the trick. Rather than a pedicure, I invested $9.99 in a foot file off Amazon. I used an Amazon gift card courtesy of Swagbucks, so $9.99 went into the saved savings account.
Total spent: $297.35 ($57.35 out of the weekly funds)
Wednesday: I spent most of the day working. And obsessively checking Hyatts and Hiltons in London (I want that to be my next big trip) to help me decide between the Hyatt and Hilton credit cards. This kept me busy until trivia. There, despite having eaten my dinner (admittedly a few hours beforehand), I was ravenous, so I ordered a burger ($13.50 — ouch).
We also used a voucher from a previous win to get some spinach and artichoke dip. Unfortunately, this raised the pre-voucher total bill, thereby raising the tip I needed to give. So all in all, I paid $19.25. Double ouch. Not volunteering to put the voucher on my bill again for a time or two. And making sure I eat a protein bar before I go to that establishment again so I can just order fries next time.
Total spent: $19.25
Thursday: It was a quiet day. I worked, blogged a bit, exercised, goofed off on Twitter and… That’s about it. I started the third season of Riverdale on Netflix, and otherwise vegged out. The only item of note is that I wrote a check to Safeco for $37.93, the amount my policy increased when I informed the company I was divorced.
Total spent: $37.93
Seven day total: $426.34 ($186.34 out of the weekly funds)
How did your spending go this week? Hopefully with fewer major expenses than mine.
