These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the credit card to maximize rewards. So I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one as charges accrue. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I started the fifth day of my financial week with $25.42 and had therapy (a $25 copay) later that day. Meanwhile, I was running low on contact lens solution. So there’s no way I was going to last the full financial week. Sigh.
After therapy, I came home for about 90 minutes, then went over to Darryl’s (aka the ex-plumber in case you forgot that I’m now calling him by name). He was making his specialty for me: pepper chicken pasta in a cream sauce. Freakin’ delicious, and I’m not even that big a fan of cream sauces.
Total spent: $25
I had to start a new financial week to get my protein bars for the month. They were $76.90. Normally I don’t take anything over $75 out of the weekly funds, but this was just barely over that. Besides I feel weird letting a groceries charge linger on the card.
Netflix also hit the card for $14.11. And I had to pick up more of my contact lens solution.
I went to CVS to get the contact lens solution. I had $7 in Extrabux plus a 30% off coupon, so the total was $4.56 with $8.80 going to the saved savings account.
I also went to the grocery store for more frozen meals and a couple other items. The total was $24.50 with $10.28 going to saved savings.
I was supposed to go to a bar crawl with this new MeetUp group I’m trying out. But I’ve been spending way too much to go out in good conscience, so I begged off.
Instead, I caught up on some shows on Hulu and went to bed around 9:30 p.m. because I’m boring.
Total spent: $139.15 — so much for lying low this week, sigh
I was supposed to work next weekend, but the other gal at work texted to see if I’d switch. A friend’s mother had died, and she was flying out to be with her friend. So not something I could really say no to.
This was a disappointing turn of events because this was Darryl’s weekend off. He only gets every other weekend off, with days off during the week as well. His schedule is weird.
At any rate, I get done with work at 7 p.m., so there was still time to see each other. It just meant less time, since we both go to bed relatively early, and that I couldn’t sleep in.
It did, however, mean that I got out of having to go to a junior high football game. Darryl was going to see his friend’s kid play and wanted me to come along for some unfathomable reason. I guess so I’d spend some time around his friends? I was going to go but wouldn’t have enjoyed it as I don’t understand much about football. Having to work was a get out of jail free card.
I worked during day and worked out. I also did a little work on some blog posts. I’m four posts — almost five! — ahead, which is exciting/a relief. I hate scrambling for ideas last-minute.
I won an eBay auction for a lipstick that I love but has been discontinued. I was the only bidder so I got it for $7 plus $4.45 shipping — but I had a $5 off coupon from eBay. So I paid $6.45 with $5 going into saved savings.
Darryl and I were supposed to go out to dinner, but somehow that morphed into my going along on a guy’s night instead. Don’t ask me how.
I Ubered to his friend’s house so we could all leave together for the club. That was $19.79. We went downtown and the guys got a table, which is to say that we got bottle service (eep!), and bottles were heinously expensive. I’m still waiting to hear what my portion of the bill will be. It won’t be pretty, assuming Darryl isn’t just covering me. It wasn’t clear at the time.
And I didn’t get a chance to ask him at the end of the night because I unfortunately over-imbibed and had to go home early. I was not well.
My Uber home from the bar was $31.75 after tip. I still have a gift card balance, so these amounts go into saved savings.
I dragged myself woozily out of bed at 7 a.m. to answer emails, then went and conked back out for a bit. I woke up feeling significantly better, if still a little tender-stomached, so I nibbled on some crackers and drank my water.
I felt better enough at 1 p.m. to go to Macy’s and pick up the white sandals for my Marilyn Monroe outfit. Unfortunately, they were too big and more unfortunately the store doesn’t have the next size down, even online.
I returned the shoes and it’s back to the drawing board on footwear. I’ll check the thrift store on Monday (half price day) to see if there are any serviceable shoes there in white or silver. But I’m not holding my breath.
I went home, finished my workday and watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix. I went to bed at 8:30 because my body was still taxed from the overdrinking/not getting enough sleep.
Total spent: $0 — finally!
I worked and worked on the blog. I pushed myself through a workout though it was extra unpleasant today for some reason.
I got an email from Harry & David — where I get my mom’s birthday gift from each year (Royal Riviera pears) — saying that the gift I gave last year was $24.99, which is $15 off. So I went ahead and bought the gift early, scheduling delivery for closer to her birthday.
After work, I went to the thrift store to look for the costume’s shoes. I found a pair of white ones that, while not accurate to the movie, will work well enough. They were $3.25 after the discount. So at least the costume is coming in under $40.
I also found two dresses in case I want to go out clubbing again. I realized Saturday night that I had zero club attire in my closet.
The first dress was $5.90 after the discount. The second one was only $2.50 because it had a broken zipper. On the way home, I dropped it off at the dry cleaners and paid $20 for them to fix it.
This left me with only about $20 in my account, which means there’s no way I’m making it through a full week — for the second week in a row, argh! I could have waited on the zipper, but I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be something I kept meaning to get done and never actually did. So I still feel like it’s money well spent.
Total spent: $57.61
I woke up and did a little work and even started a load of laundry. So $2.50 went into the washer/dryer fund.
I noticed Josie vocalizing a bit while using the bathroom and realized she’d been doing this for a few days now. So I took her to the vet.
Later that afternoon, I set to getting stains off my Marilyn Monroe dress. During a trial run, I had taken off the costume before my makeup and got concealer and lipstick on the nice white dress. Sigh.
If you wondered how to get concealer stains out of fabric:
- Rub shaving cream into the spot (rub well)
- Let sit for 15 minutes
- Dab/rinse with cold water
- Let sit for another 15 minutes
- Dab/rinse with warm water
Sounds weird but it worked!
As for lipstick:
- Spray with hairspray (the old school stuff with lots of alcohol)
- Let sit for 10-15 minutes
- Dab — do not rub — with cool water until the stain lifts
Amazingly, this worked too. And it was very red lipstick.
I picked Josie up from the vet. A mere $212 later (thanks to x-rays) the cat was back home and happy.
When I got home, I realized I didn’t want the frozen meals I had sitting around. It’d been eight days since I last got takeout, so I went and picked some up ($9.34).
I only had about $18 left in checking, so I probably shouldn’t have done this. But I knew that I had to pick up a $30+ prescription the following day, so I would run out of funds early no matter what so… *shrug*
Total spent: $223.84 ($11.84 out of weekly funds)
Not much happened today. I worked and worked out. The handyman company I sometimes hire came out to consult on putting a security door on the guest house. This would provided added security, obviously, but also let her open up the house for a breeze without letting the bugs in.
Unfortunately, I was told that the estimate won’t even be coming in until probably the end of next week. And work might not start until December. I might call and see if they have a handyman whose schedule is a little less full. First, I’ll see how much the dang door will cost.
I was supposed to pick up some prescriptions, but I put it off for a day because I was feeling lazy. But tomorrow I have to pick up some prescriptions from Fry’s which will cause me to end my financial week one day early. You win some, you lose some.
Total spent: $0
Total spent: $508.59 ($296.59 out of weekly funds)
Yet another bad week for spending. The only comfort I take is that about $50 went to saved savings from the Uber rides. So at least some of the money got saved.
