These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. So I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one as charges accrue. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I worked, but I took a break from working out as my knee was bothering me the day before.
I was running low on frozen dinners, so I went to the store. This time I made it six days in between grocery runs, so I’m getting better. The cost for everything (I also got some hummus and cucumbers and a $1 box of Whoppers because I’m weak) was $23.44. Unfortunately, I forgot to get my dessert chocolate, so I’ll need to go back to the store in about three days. You win some, you lose some.
The big news for the day is that I made a decision: I decided to be exclusive with the ex-plumber. Still nervous about it; after all, it’s my first step toward anything even quasi-serious since the divorce. But he’s a really good guy. I like him a lot, and he was starting to hint that soon he’d get sick of sharing my attentions.
I thought about letting him go so I could keep on cougar-ing, but that made me sad. I realized — or finally admitted — that I like him more than the other guys I was seeing. So it didn’t really make sense to keep seeing them at the risk of losing him.
I called to let him know. He was surprised and a little worried that he’d pressured me into it.
That night was trivia. I got a ghost pepper grilled cheese sandwich which was delicious. It was $9.68 after tax and tip. More importantly, we won first place!
Total spent: $33.12
I worked and worked out. I think it’s time for new workout shoes as my knee was bothering me. (And I’m trying to be better about replacing my shoes.)
I planned on going to a MeetUp karaoke night that night to check out a new group in my area. The ex-plumber — now known as Darryl because I finally just asked his permission to use his name — called to see what I was up to and said I should come over if I got bored with karaoke.
Then I found out that karaoke didn’t start til 9 p.m., and he’s generally in or headed to bed by then since he gets up around 4 a.m. So I headed over early to hang out with him for a bit.
On the way, I filled up the car ($30.48) and picked up a medication ($15).
Darryl and I talked about the exclusivity thing for a bit. He reiterated that he was a bit worried he’d rushed me. Which… I mean… kinda? But not really. I told him that in the end I came to the decision on my own. That seemed to satisfy him.
We went and got some Dairy Queen so he could take me out in his new car. (His last one was totaled in an accident.) It’s nice! But it’s also a Kia so he seems to have gotten a good deal on it.
After the ride/ice cream, I left him so that he could get some sleep, and headed over to karaoke. The people seem nice enough, though I didn’t talk to anyone extensively. Everyone seemed to have someone to talk to a lot of the time. But I think I’m going to go on their bar crawl next week and see if I click with them more.
I got some wings while I was there ($9.68 after tax and tip) and left around midnight.
Total spent: $55.16
I worked today, but the email load wasn’t too bad. So I did some cleaning. Never my favorite task.
I went to Big 5 to get replacement workout shoes and found a nice pair of Dr. Scholl’s for $29.97, which is (lamentably) pretty affordable these days. After tax they were $32.57.
I was almost out of my dessert chocolate, so I went to the grocery store for that and got a few other things while I was there. The total was $9.17.
I settled back at home and watched more of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Total spent: $41.74
Despite getting an almost obscene amount of sleep, I was thoroughly unmotivated to go anywhere or do anything. I did a small amount of work on the blog, and I worked out. Otherwise, I sat around and read or watched TV.
At 6 p.m., I was really hungry. Like “A protein bar or frozen meal isn’t going to cut it” hungry. So I caved and got more takeout. I’m pretty annoyed with myself; it’d only been five days since the last time. But I couldn’t think of anything else that I had on hand that would fill me up. So… Oh well.
This necessitated a starting a new financial week. The last one lasted eight days, but I’m hoping the next one will last longer.
Total spent: $9.34
I worked and worked out. I also searched for a birthday present for Darryl’s, whose big day is coming up at the end of the month. He love, love, loves Marilyn Monroe and had some of his prints stolen at his old place. So I decided a good gift would be a couple of prints.
I hadn’t planned on buying so early, but Art.com was having a 40% off sale. So I went through Mr. Rebates and purchased two prints from there ($27.35) and two frames from Michael’s. Well, technically I purchased three frames so I could get free shipping, but I’ll return one. So the end total for the frames will be $29.10. Turns out 16″ x 16″ frames are pricey!
I had a specialist visit that had a $15 copay.
Darryl swung by, and we had dinner. I had a $30 coupon from winning trivia that couldn’t be used on trivia night itself. Given that stipulation, the team has never gone back.
Since I live closest to the restaurant, they said I should use the voucher. So I applied that to our meal, for an end total of $18.75 after tip. (The place has pricey burgers and Darryl had two beers.)
All the Marilyn stuff earlier in the day had made me decide to go as Marilyn Monroe for Halloween. I found a deal at Party City (on Mr. Rebates, of course) for 20% off a $19.99 dress — one ala Seven Year Itch. The total was $17.37 after tax.
Total spent: $107.57 — ouch!
Continuing the spending trend, I bought shoes to go with the Marilyn dress. They were $26.90 after tax. Cheap for shoes, not cheap in general. At least now I have white heels, which I’ll probably need at some point in the future.
Then I looked for wigs and found one for $17.86 after tax. There were some a little cheaper, but they were poor quality.
Thankfully, that’s the end of what I need to get because this turned into one pricey Halloween outfit!
At least I should get to wear it twice this year alone: once the weekend before Halloween and once the weekend after Halloween, when a new MeetUp group I joined will be having a house party. And you’d better believe I’m wearing the damn thing again next year!
My shipment of peanut butter — they don’t sell Adam’s down here for some reason, and everything else tastes too sugary — shipped out today. It was $28.75.
At this rate, I’m not going to last the full financial week.
I guess it was dumb of me to get the Marilyn Monroe outfit right on top of the presents for Darryl. But I got very excited about being Marilyn, and I was lukewarm (at best) about other costume ideas.
I also probably should’ve limited myself to one print for Darryl’s birthday. But anxiety hit and convinced me that if I only got one, it’d turn out that he had it and just hadn’t put it up yet. So I got two. Stupid anxiety.
After work, I returned some items to Victoria’s Secret and then went to pick up my new glasses. They’re multifocal — getting. old. — so they’re going to take some adjustment.
On my way back to the car, I had to go through JCPenney, where I saw a final markdown section. I took a quick peek and walked away with a dress for a wedding I’m attending in December. I didn’t have any wedding-appropriate dresses, so this was actually a necessary purchase.
Happily, it was only $17.58 after tax. Glad I found it, but I’m also awfully sick of whipping out my credit card.
I came home and watched TV and generally vegged out until bedtime.
Total spent: $91.09 — double ouch!
Work actually kept me pretty busy for a change, so I didn’t get much done on the blog during the day.
My wig came, so I spent some time fussing with that. Too long because the time for my working out came and went. Sigh. But to be fair, I had a sore spot on my ankle, and I was worried about the leg weights rubbing against it. So an extra day of rest won’t kill me.
I went for my massage ($53 after tip). After that, I went to the dollar store to pick up a few things ($3.17). Then I went to Party City and picked up my Marilyn dress. Only to get home and discover they’d given me an extra small. (I got very self-conscious about my weight before I noticed the tag!)
I watched a little TV until rush hour was over, then went back and got the right size. I also had to pick up a wig cap ($5.42).
Total spent: $61.59
Total spent: $399.61
Not a good week for spending! The presents, costume and then massage costume are what truly did me in, I think. Without those, it would have been a relatively normal, if not great, spending week.
But these confluences happen. I just have to be careful the rest of the financial month.
