These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I know this will shock you, but I worked, worked out and worked on the blog. What can I say? I’m a creature of habit.
After work, I ran to Walgreens to get some contact lens solution ($10.56). I saved $3 with a digital coupon, so I put $3 into saved savings too.
While I was out, I was hungry and my frozen meals didn’t sound appealing. So I got a small pizza for $12.40 after tip.
I came back and watched an episode of Empire, then got ready for trivia. I had to show up early to ensure that we got a table. Why me? Because I have the most disposable time, getting off work the earliest.
I killed about 40 minutes playing on Twitter until the first person showed up. Once everyone was there, we used our bar cash to order some food for the table. Even ordering three dishes, we still didn’t use it all up (there’s $1 left), so the food didn’t cost us anything.
Total spent: $25.96
Walgreens was having a flash 30% off sale for two hours, and I’m running low on my cache of toilet paper with just one and a half 12-count packages left. (Yep, that’s low for me.)
So I got 18 more packages, which should last me quite a while. The total was $70.76. Another $12 went into saved savings thanks to Walgreens rewards and digital coupons.
This made me have to start a new financial week, but the previous one lasted 11 days. So I was more than satisfied.
Other than that, the workday passed quietly. I worked out, though I wasn’t feeling swell; so I kept the ankle weights off, making the workout much more doable.
In the evening I hit the grocery store and spent $32.09 with $6.17 in saved savings. Otherwise, I rested up for Saturday, since we were planning on going out to celebrate my friend Christine’s birthday. So I just watched TV, texted with Darryl a bit and then went to bed.
Total spent: $121.02
Unfortunately, I woke up at 7 a.m., but at least not waking up to an alarm felt more restful. Still, I lay in bed for the next two hours, alternately dozing and reading blogs. It was important to rest up because I had a three-hour hair appointment and (separately) drunken revelry planned for the day.
Around 11 a.m. I left the house to get a crossbody bag from Ross. I’ve been meaning to get one for months now. All I have is my big clunky purse and a tiny handbag that doesn’t fit my keys’ large fob very well. I found a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag I liked well enough for $14.99 (retail $50, woot!).
While I was there I picked up some black sunglasses for $4.99. The only ones I have are garish colors. Fine for day-to-day errands, but not so great if I want to go out looking nice while there’s still daylight. The total for both items was $21.70 after tax.
I also dropped by the bank and got $20 of walking around money. I was down to $7, and that night’s festivities included trips to both an arcade bar and a pinball bar. So I’d need some cash to get tokens.
I got my hair cut and colored for $50, and felt much better in general. Having gray roots, especially with as dark as my hair is, makes me pretty self-conscious.
I came home, ate, then got ready to go out. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the pinball bar, but we did go to the arcade bar, which is always fun. I played a little Galaga, pinball and Qbert.
Overall, it was yet another frugality-obliterating evening. Including Uber and some food (what I ate at home didn’t hold me), I spent $111.56.
There’s a reason my friends and I don’t go out drinking all that often. It’s too pricey. Luckily, we’re not going out until New Year’s Eve — and we may not even be doing that — so I shouldn’t go killing my budget again for a while. It’s still embarrassing to have spent so much, but I find that spending sounds like a lot less of a big deal when you’re drunk. Hence the bill.
Total spent: $203.26 ($91.70 out of weekly funds)
I had gone to bed late, so I woke up at 11:30 a.m. but at least I felt rested. I putzed around a little, worked out and then did some work on the blog.
After that, I watched some TV, catching up on shows from the prior week. I’d fallen behind on while bingeing Empire.
In the evening, I noticed I was running low on protein bars, so I ordered a new batch of them ($76.90). That left me with $7.77 in my account, only three days into my financial week. Looks like this “week” will be ending early. Sigh.
I watched some TV, texted briefly with Darryl (agreeing to meet up the following day), and went to bed around 9:30 p.m.
Total spent: $76.90
Not so shockingly, I worked, worked on the blog and worked out.
At 3:30 p.m. I met up with Anne from Unique Gifter. She was in town and wanted to meet up. I’ve followed her on Twitter for ages now, so it’s nice to hear that I’m cool enough that she wanted to meet up.
I picked her up from the Desert Botanical Gardens, and we went to a Mexican restaurant that my friend Leila had recommended. The food was tasty, and Ann insisted on picking up the check. So my paltry $7.77 remained intact.
I came home, and Darryl came over to hang out for a few hours, which was nice. I hadn’t seen him since the previous Wednesday. So we kind of missed each other. #UghSoMushy
I went to bed around 10 p.m.
Total spent: $0 (finally!!!)
I noticed in the morning that I was almost out of one of my medications. So I called in a refill.
I’m actually completely out of another medication: my Abilify. It’s one I only got on when things were really rough with Tim, which was exacerbating my depression. Now that things are so much better in my life, I don’t feel like it’s necessary/doing much for me. So I’m going to try not refilling it.
I’ll be carefully monitoring my depression symptoms over the next few weeks. If things start to feel rough, I can call in a refill and get back on it. Because I’m Bipolar II, antidepressants affect me within a day or two, so it won’t be a big deal if I do need to go back on it.
This is a gamble, I’ll admit. It’s just that I’d like to get back down to two depression meds (one mood stabilizer, one antidepressant). Three feels excessive to me, especially now that things are going so well. But if things get tough, I’ll get right back on the Abilify.
The Banfield plan ($33.95) hit the account today, so I had to start a new financial week just five days after the last one started. Sigh. But just the toilet paper, hair cut and protein bars totaled $197.66 (plus $12 in saved savings). So I suppose it’s understandable that I ran through the money so quickly.
I was craving takeout after my workout — my body was screaming for protein and there’s lots of chicken in one of those meals — so I got some for $9.34.
Later, I went to see JoJo Rabbit since it was the cheap night for Stubs members. I paid $5.43 for the ticket and $8.68 for the popcorn. The movie was strange but wonderful. I highly recommend it.
Total spent: $57.40
I paid my Victoria Secret bill ($51.71). Thankfully, that should be the last of the underwear/bras I need to buy for quite a while.
I was supposed to go to Rooftop Bingo as part of a MeetUp group, and I messaged the host (a friend of mine) to see if she’d be arriving early. I wanted to hang out.
Unfortunately, she had to bow out because she was visiting someone in the hospital. She asked me to sit in for her, and after some hemming and hawing I agreed.
After work, I went and got gas ($30.78). I saved $2.20 with grocery store fuel rewards, so that went into saved savings. Then I went to pick up a medication ($5.44). I went next door to the dollar store and got a balloon ($1.09) for the table that night at bingo, so people from MeetUp would know to congregate there.
Once I got to bingo, I ordered a quesadilla from the restaurant. I try to support venues that hold free events by ordering a little something. It was $7.52 after tip.
Bingo went well enough. Only six people showed, but that made it a little easier to make sure everyone kept chatting and that no one felt left out.
I got home at 9:30 p.m and was in bed by 10.
Total spent:$98.74 (ouch!)
Total spent: $583.28 ($471.72 out of weekly funds)
A baaaaaaad week. By far the worst I’ve seen without a repair bill being involved! Granted $147.67 alone was just toilet paper and protein bars. Another $50 for my hair cut and $51.71 for a previous purchase (Victoria’s Secret credit card), and you have almost a full week’s spending right there. Add in the night on the town and… Yeah you can see where these big numbers came from.
Still, definitely something I’ll be trying not to repeat.
How did your week go?
