These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I actually woke up a little before my alarm today and wasn’t terribly groggy when I got up. Maybe that SAD light is doing more than just getting me alert in the morning.
I worked, worked out and worked on the blog. Shocking, I know.
I got a notice from my bank that escrow is nearly $400 under what’s needed. This is after I threw $300 in there a few months ago to pad the account. Sheesh.
I have to write a check soon. Otherwise, the bank will spread out the amount over the course of a year, which would increase my monthly payment by around $45 a month.
It’s times like this that I’m particularly grateful that I make enough to have built up a sizeable savings account, so I can weather $400 hits without freaking out.
After work, I went to therapy. Only to find out that I didn’t actually HAVE therapy that day. I wrote it down wrong on the calendar. Sigh.
So I went over to Darryl’s early. We hung out for a bit watching some episodes of Shameless, then he cooked up some beef and chicken tacos (chicken for me, ain’t he thoughtful?). We then watched the Browns vs Steelers game. By which I mean I half watched it and played on Twitter. I left in the third quarter because it was getting late.
On the way home, I was severely craving chocolate/ice cream, so I picked up a Dairy Queen blizzard for $5.85.
Total spent: $5.85
I once again woke up a few minutes before my alarm and felt alert rather than desperate to stay in bed. Hooray for the SAD light!
I started a load of laundry and put $3.50 into the washer/dryer fund. After work I went to have some beauty services done which were $40.
On the way back home, I picked up a couple of things from CVS for $22.80. I used a $10 gift card mom got through one of her rewards programs, so I paid $12.80 total but put another $10 into saved savings.
I did some work on an overtime project while watching Empire. Around 7 p.m., I took a break and made my weekly grocery store run for $33.97.
I spent the day mainly on an overtime project for work. It’s tedious, so I had Empire playing in the background while I did my thing, and it’s probably what saved my sanity.
I took it in bursts and took a couple of hour breaks, but I still spent almost 11 hours on it. Too bad I still have several hours’ worth of work left. Sigh.
Other than the project, I did nothing. No working out, no working on the blog. Just overtime and the occasional meal/snack break.
On the plus side, this means I didn’t leave the house to spend any money, which was getting pretty low by this point. Hulu ($6.49) did get deducted automatically from my checking account though.
Total spent: $6.49
I was so efficient today! I woke up around quarter to nine and was out the door by 9:35 a.m.
I had three errands to run. First, I returned the sunglasses I bought the week before because they randomly broke. Second, it was off to PETCO for cat litter and cat food. Then to the grocery store to get the turkey for Friendsgiving next Saturday. It was 68 cents per pound, so I wanted to grab the deal while I could.
I was back home in 70 minutes. Phew!
The litter and cat food ($68.74) were put on a store gift card I bought previously, so nothing came out of the weekly funds. The 20.56-lb turkey and the oven bags were, ridiculously, only $17.01.
Then I came home and worked on the overtime project some more. Happily, I finished up right around 5 p.m., when Darryl got off work. So I went over around 6 p.m.
We watched a little football (well, I was present while football was playing, anyway) and then met up with his coworker and the guy’s girlfriend for a drink. We were there for about two hours before taking off.
Unfortunately, Darryl and I hung out way too late, so I didn’t get home until 12:30 a.m. Stupid of me, really. He said I should just stay the night, but I didn’t want to sleep in my contacts, and I have a nightly dose of medication to take. So I went home, slightly bleary-eyed.
Total spent: $85.75 ($17.01 out of weekly funds)
And woke up painfully about six hours after I went to bed. I caught up on emails and tried to lie back down. Unfortunately, despite being weary I couldn’t shut my brain off enough to get to sleep. So after half an hour I got back up and played around on the Internet in between emails. My job is so cushy!
Not much else of note happened today. The lack of sleep made me crave takeout, so I got some for $9.34. Then I came home and watched season five of Empire. I’m very nearly caught up. After this, I think I’ll watch The Crown.
Total spent: $9.34
It was a pretty quiet day for the most part. I worked and worked out. I didn’t do much work on the blog because I just needed a break. At this point, I’m at least editing posts about six days a week, so I generally need a day of goofing off on Twitter (or, more correctly, only goofing off on Twitter).
After work I turned on Empire and settled in for the night. But at 7:30 p.m. a friend texted me to see if I wanted to test out his heated pool now that the weather had finally cooled down to a chilly-for-us-wimps 59 degrees.
I had nothing better to do, so I went over and we spent a couple of hours floating and chatting. This is the guy whose house parties I go to, so it was nice to get to know him a little more one on one to feel like we’re really friends and I’m not just using him for his parties.
I got home around 10 p.m. and went straight to bed.
Total spent: $0
I woke up pretty groggy because I’d woken up in the middle of the night for about an hour (or maybe more), my brain refusing to shut back down. But sitting in front of the SAD light helped wake me up and stopped me wanting to crawl back into bed.
Otherwise, there wasn’t much to report about my workday. I worked on the blog. It was a rest day, so no workout for me.
At 3:30, I had my lip wax. This required me to transfer in a new set of weekly funds, but at least the previous “week” lasted 8 days.
I transferred out $12 for my lip wax and paid $3 out of my walking around money. While I was at the wax place, I was told I had just one wax left in the package I bought. There was a Buy 9, Get 3 Free special going on again, so I bought that for a total of $117. That’s one year’s worth of lip waxes, so at least it’s not a common expense. Since it was such a big charge, it doesn’t come out of weekly funds.
Then I headed over to the grocery store. I picked up about $24 in food for Friendsgiving (cheese, two types of crackers, hummus — so the vegetarian wouldn’t starve — and the makings for pumpkin pie), a $7 sandwich, an extra hummus for myself and a little candy for a total of $39.69.
This wasn’t a particularly fun day. I was antsy all afternoon and into the evening. I hope it’s not a sign that I need to go back on the third medication. I think it’s just that I haven’t been getting out that much, and I’m restless. But I’m keeping an eye on the symptoms just in case.
Total spent: $171.69 ($51.69 out of weekly funds)
Total spent: $379.39 ($190.65 out of weekly funds)
Not a bad week in terms of weekly spending — even if I’d taken the cat food and cat litter out of weekly funds. (Which in retrospect I should’ve done, but my brain hiccupped or something and I didn’t. And now that a new financial week has started, it’d be too confusing to deal with.) As overall spending, it’s not great thanks to the lip wax package. But since that’s a year’s worth of waxes — and since I’m only paying for nine months’ worth — I’m okay with it.
