These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
Ugh, I did not want to get out of bed today. Like, more so than other days. But I did, obviously, and hoped to get a nap in. Unfortunately, by the time I caught up on emails, it was in the period where the Orkin guy could show up. So no nap for me.
I waited until 11 a.m. and called my mom to wish her a happy birthday and chat a little.
Later I worked, worked out and worked on the blog. I also went out and got some contact lens solution ($8.56 and a $5 reward, so $5 into saved savings) and a couple of groceries I’d forgotten ($9.98). After work, I rested up for the quasi-bachelorette party I was attending that night.
At 7:30 p.m. I headed out and met up with my friends. We all went to a dueling piano bar and listened to the players’ do various pop songs on request. It was pretty fun.
I volunteered to pay for one of the soon-to-be-bride’s drinks without noticing that she’d ordered a huge one that was $20. After tax and tip I paid $25.18. Ouch.
Extra ouch: Parking in Tempe is hard to come by, so I had to park in a lot and paid $12 for the three and a half hours I was there. Sigh.
Unfortunately, those two expenses meant I had to end my financial week early and transfer in more money. Grrrr. But it’s not like friends get married every day so…
Total spent: $60.72
Ouch. Today hurt.
I woke up exhausted, having gone to bed just six hours prior (I need close to nine hours’ sleep). I stumbled out into the living room, caught up on emails, then took a nap. Then caught back up on emails and took another nap. Finally, I felt human again.
I didn’t want to, but I had to work out. I knew I wouldn’t exercise the day of my friend’s wedding, since I’d want to save my energy. So I sucked it up and worked out.
After work, I had a massage ($53). On the way, I stopped and got $30 worth of gas (the terminal was broken at the pump and I had to pay inside and therefore guesstimate how much I needed).
On the way home, I stopped by the dollar store and picked up a greeting card for the gift cards I was giving the bride and groom. (I received two $50 Home Goods GCs at FinCon, and the couple just moved into a new house. So I figure they can use them more than I can. And yay free present!) I picked up some ginger snaps while I was there. Total: $1.50.
I also stopped at the bank to pick up some dollar bills for the open bar at the wedding, so I could tip. I got $10 worth.
I was by Frys and hummus sounded good, so I picked up some of that, some cucumbers to eat with it and a box of Whoppers. Total: $5.75.
Then I went home, watched The Crown, painted my toenails (which had been sadly neglected these past few weeks, and I was wearing open toed shoes to the wedding) and generally chilled out.
I talked to Darryl briefly. He’s been sick, so we haven’t been able to see each other since Monday. Fate/his work schedule have been conspiring against us so it feels like we’re lucky to see each other once a week these past few weeks. Sigh.
He said he’d call me after he got off work Saturday to see what I was up to/if we were still out and about after the wedding. But he’s not off work til 9 p.m. so who knows if I’ll be too exhausted (after a wedding and subsequent fun) to see him.
I went to bed at 9 p.m. to make sure I was plenty rested for the following day. And because I’m boring.
Total spent: $100.25 — ouch!
I woke up at a glorious 8:45 a.m. feeling entirely rested. I worked on the blog a little, putzed around and generally tried not to do too much before the wedding.
My friend Brandon picked me up and we drove 40 minutes (!) to get to the church. It was a pretty nice ceremony, though very religious which I’m not used to. Even with all the Catholic religion stuff, it only lasted about 75 minutes. It could’ve been a lot worse.
Afterward, several members of our group were starving and knew we wouldn’t be fed right away at the reception. So we stopped by Dairy Queen to get snacks. I had some fries, but Brandon inexplicably decided to pay for them. I wasn’t going to argue.
We had a great time at the reception. I averaged a little over a drink an hour (the ceremony was four and a half hours long), so I tipped $5 total.
Afterward, we were on our way to a bar that Brandon had found online when searching “Scottsdale bars” — but we were drawn into another place that looked fun. Which is how we accidentally crashed a company party. But whatever, they had a make your own s’mores bar. So totally a good time.
That ended not too long after we got there, so we headed to the bar we’d originally intended to go to. Darryl and his roommate met up with us there. After a night of free drinks, all the bar’s drinks seemed overpriced; so I didn’t get anything.
I crashed at Darryl’s place around 1 a.m.
Total spent: $5 ($0 out of weekly funds)
I didn’t sleep well at Darryl’s — he snores, especially right now when he’s just getting over a cold — so when I came home at 9 a.m., I crawled back into bed for a few hours.
I woke up around noon. Which is when the Darryl drama began. Click here for that saga of ridiculousness.
Target was offering 10% off gift cards, and that’s where I get my protein bars. So I got the maximum allowable amount ($300 worth) for future use. That’s obviously too much to come out of weekly funds, so I didn’t deduct anything from the bank account.
Total spent: $270 ($0 out of weekly funds)
In the morning I ordered some more fiber gummies and the hair powder I use to cover my gray roots in between color jobs. The total was $30.98.
I watched TV that night in the midst of the aforementioned Darryl drama.
Total spent: $30.98
I didn’t do much during the day. I’d had a bad night of sleep, so a workout wasn’t going to happen. And I was too fidgety from the Darryl crap to work on the blog much.
After work, I decided to go to a movie instead since it was $5 Tuesdays as AMC. I spent $5.43 on the movie and $8.68 on popcorn. I saw Knives Out, which was a very different movie than expected but still very entertaining.
Interestingly, one of the guys I was seeing before Darryl and I became exclusive texted to see how things were going. Good timing.
Total spent: $14.11
For the past couple of weeks, my reverse osmosis system has had a stream that’s only full force for a few seconds and then slows to basically a trickle. I figured the filter needed to be changed, so I had the plumbers over to do that. ($181.48) For the record, I looked at doing it myself, but there are a lot of tubes running every which way. It was too intimidating.
When they were done, it was still trickling, but they said the storage tank just needed to fill up and to give it a few hours. I did, but the trickle continued. I decided to let it fill overnight and see if things went back to normal.
After work, I ran to the drugstore for a couple of things. ($19.26)
Then… Well, things having run their course with Darryl, I texted the guy from yesterday to see if he was free that night. He was, so he came over for a bit.
Total spent: $200.74 ($19.26 out of weekly funds)
Total spent: $681.80 ($225.32 out of weekly funds) Ye gods that’s a lot of money! Obviously, the big culprits here were the plumbing bill and the Target gift cards. Beyond that, spending was actually pretty reasonable. I’d say I hope that next week is back to normal, but the water filter is still giving me issues, which means another pricey bill.
