These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I woke up after approximately 12 hours’ sleep feeling human again. I guess the bladder infection was really doing a number on my body.
I got up and answered emails. It was surprisingly busy for a holiday. Still, the flow ebbed, and I got some work done on the blog.
I started a load of laundry, so I transferred $3.50 into the Washer/Dryer fund.
At 11:30 a.m. I went to pick up some groceries. I wanted bread and cheese to make turkey sandwiches, some more crackers for the remaining cut up cheese and my weekly hummus fix. The total came to $12.24 with an additional $1.71 going to saved savings.
I was still feeling not quite up to snuff, even with my energy med, (or maybe I was just lazy for the holiday) so I took the day off of working out. Again. I’ve got to get back on track.
Beyond that, I just answered emails and watched TV all day. Honestly, I felt a little lonely, not helped by Darryl not swinging by to say hi. He ended up having his daughter — and the mom doesn’t want him introducing the baby to his girlfriend — so it was moot. But he already hadn’t planned on stopping by, which annoyed me somewhat. Especially since he’s working so much overtime that I’m barely seeing him. Not good.
I went to bed around 9 p.m. because there wasn’t much else to do, and I felt kind of weary all day. I think my body is having a harder time than usual fighting this bladder infection. Here’s hoping the meds kick in soon.
Total spent: $17.45
A Black Friday where there was nothing I wanted to shop for? Weird. But also kind of a nice feeling, to be reminded that I have everything I need/want.
I didn’t sleep well the night before, so I was tired most of the day. I laid down for a little bit which helped, but I still wasn’t terribly peppy so I didn’t work out.
In the afternoon, I discovered that Target was offering a 20% off coupon when you spent $50. That’s where I get my protein bars (which I eat two a day of), so I got four boxes ($51.27) to get the coupon. I’ll use the coupon and order at least two months’ worth next time to see some big savings.
I had to start a new financial week, but the last one lasted nine days, so that’s pretty good.
I felt like crap most of the afternoon, so I lay down for a while, playing on Twitter, trying to rest up so I could go out to a MeetUp event that night. I just barely had the energy to go, but I’m glad I did because I had fun catching up with people.
I got a burger ($14.42 after tax and tip).
The meetup location was practically around the corner from Darryl’s so we agreed I should come visit for a couple of hours once he was off work at 9 p.m. I left around 11:30 a.m. and crashed into bed around midnight.
Total spent: $65.69
I woke up at 8:30 but dawdled in bed til about 9:30. Then I chatted with a friend for a bit while doing some cleaning up. I’d neglected dishes and a couple of chores for a few days while I wasn’t feel so well.
Fortunately/unfortunately, I was done pretty quickly and then had hours kill before the house party that night. And was starting to feel kind of worn out again. Uh oh.
I ended up taking a nap, which made me feel better.
I did some shopping, getting my mom’s gift and later some groceries too, including juice for the party. I also had some saved savings. I’m being purposefully vague about amounts here because she reads this blog. So suffice it to say that all of my purchases together equaled $48.97.
I went to the MeetUp party, which is always a good time. I spent $10.14 on the Uber getting there and $12.23 getting back. I got home around 12:45 a.m. and was in bed by 1 a.m..
Total spent: $71.34
I woke up at a glorious 11 a.m. Must’ve needed the sleep.
I texted a bit with a friend, then worked on the blog. But mainly I just chilled out all day.
I decided to give myself one last day of not working out. Re-entry on Monday is going to be awful, but I wanted to make sure I feel up to snuff before I push my body.
My bimonthly peanut butter shipment (they don’t sell Adam’s peanut butter down here for some reason) was charged to my card ($28.75).
I watched The Crown on Netflix and otherwise did nothing all day. It was very restorative.
Total spent: $28.75
Work was fairly busy, especially for the first four hours of the day. It’s headed into our busy season, what with all the holiday shoppers, so I expect this to continue for the foreseeable future.
I paid my blog’s hosting bill for the blog ($83.40). This amount is a business expense, so it doesn’t come out of weekly funds.
I was finally able to work out, though I left off the ankle weights to ease myself back into exercise.
After work, I sat around watching The Crown til Darryl got off work at 7 p.m. He came over around 8 p.m. and we got takeout. I paid for that since he’d paid the last couple of times we went out/got food. I spent $18.68. We then came back and watched some of the latest season of Rick and Morty and generally chilled out.
Total spent: $102.08 ($18.68 out of weekly funds)
Once that was settled, I waited for my heart rate to return to normal and settled back to work and working on the blog.
I paid my city services bill ($42.95).
At night, I went out to celebrate the divorce-aversary with friends in true nerdy fashion: trivia. I ordered my usual small pizza plus a cider to celebrate. That last bit turned out to be a mistake when I got the bill and saw that the cider was $6. Ouch. So my total after tip was $20.83.
We won first place, coming from behind (4th place) on the last question, which is final Jeopardy-style where you wager up to 15 points. And we got the question right. Woot! So now we have $25 in bar cash.
I got home around 9:45 p.m. and crashed into bed — making sure to take out both contacts this time.
Total spent: $63.78
The only quiet night I had this week, since I had a bachelorette party on Thursday, a house party on Friday and a wedding on Saturday. Man, it’s nice to have a social life!
I had the 20% off coupon from Target for my Black Friday purchase So I got the maximum number of boxes (10) of my protein bars. I spent $106.64 but between that and the ones I bought on Black Friday, I have three months’ worth of bars.
Between the coupon and some Target circle rewards, I saved $24.80 which went into the saved savings account.
After work I went and got some groceries ($18.76). I saved $3.06, which went into saved savings.
Total spent: $153.26 (48.62 out of weekly funds)
Total spent: $502.35 ($314.31 out of weekly funds)
An expensive week! But the protein bars alone were $157ish of the $502.35. Add in Mom’s present, the hosting bill and the city services bill and you’ve got about 65% of my spending right there. So, while painful, the spending is at least explicable. That’s… something?
How did your week go?
