These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
Not much happened today. No dates, though I did have quite the interaction with an up-until-then potential guy from the app. See the Thursday section of my Tinder adventures post.
I went to the grocery store to get some food for game night among other stuff. ($46.41 plus $4.50 in saved savings) Of that, $18 was for game night munchies (which is getting by cheaply compared to past game nights) and $11.98 was for two bottles of vodka for future house parties at my friend Kevin’s place.
Then I went home and watched Longmire on Netflix and found some guys to talk to on Tinder who weren’t creepy or idiots. Will wonders never cease.
Total spent: $50.91
I did some work and tidied up the house/set up the tables and chairs. I did a load of laundry ($3.50 into the Washer/Dryer fund).
My fridge light burned out — first time that’s happened to me with any fridge — so I went to Home Depot and got a replacement for $4.31.
My friends came over for game night. There were only five of us, and one guy had to leave partway through. But we all still had a fun time and people were there until after midnight.
I messaged a little back and forth with a Tinder guy who I might end up seeing on Sunday.
I crashed around 1:30 a.m.
Total spent: $7.81
I worked all day and vamped until ready for the house party at my friend Kevin’s that night. I did run out to the bank to get $20 of walking around money. Finally. I’ve been without cash for around a week now.
Unfortunately, around 3:30 p.m. Kevin cancelled the shindig. Apparently, he was starting to get sick. Sigh.
So I got on Tinder to see if the night could be salvaged. I talked to a few guys but landed on one. Unfortunately, it didn’t start until quite late. Again, check out that Tinder adventures post for more info.
I spent $24.22 on a Lyft to the bar and back. It was 4 a.m. by the time I finally got to bed.
Total spent: $44.22
Which is why I was extra pissed when a guy — one I knew back before Darryl and I were exclusive and who I’ve seen a couple of times since I became single again — texted me at 7:47 in the morning. On a Sunday. Who does that?!
And it was just to see how I was doing. Gah!
I’ve already been iffy on the guy lately, so this may be the final strike against him. I hold an extreme grudge when it comes to sleep interruption.
Anyway, I texted back that I had been asleep. (Granted, I was supposed to wake up 13 minutes from then, but he didn’t need to know that.) I asked him to please never message me before 9 a.m. on a weekend again.
I worked for a while and then crawled back into bed. I woke up hungry and craving-riddled. I have zero willpower when I don’t sleep enough (not sure what my excuse is the rest of the time, mind you). So I got some pizza and cinnamon sticks ($19.99). This month’s takeout budget will be obscene.
I didn’t hear from the guy who I had plans-to-make-plans-with. Which is for the best because there was no way I was leaving the house again. Instead, I ate and watched Longmire episodes until it was finally late enough that I could go to bed without being completely lame (8 p.m.).
Total spent: $19.99
Work was pretty busy for the first couple of hours before things settled down to their normal calm pace.
Once things were quieter, I made two doctor appointments and paid three copays for tests some doctors had run ($29.33 total). I also finally filled out a form to get dental benefits added to my insurance. Woot!
And I renewed my blog domain for the year ($20.17), but that goes on the business card and therefore doesn’t come out of weekly funds.
Josie’s Banfield plan hit the credit card ($33.95).
I was nearly out of frozen meals — because of course I forgot those when I was buying food for game night — so I got those and some hummus for $20.22, with $0.99 going into saved savings.
On the way home, I picked up some more contact lens solution for $11.56 after a $2 coupons. So another $2 went into saved savings.
Total spent: $118.22 (ouch!)
I had a doctor’s appointment early in the day. It turns out I had a $25 balance with the office, so I paid that. They’re still trying to verify the copay for the 2020, so they’re going to send a bill for today’s visit.
Other than that, I didn’t do much during the day other than work and work on the blog. Well, that and extensive flirting via text with the hot 25 year old from Saturday. We talked about seeing each other again this coming weekend.
I was supposed to go to a MeetUp event, but the time got moved to 7:30 p.m. which is a late start for me (especially since food is involved and I eat early). Plus I was a little burned out from all of the spending the prior day, so I un-RSVPed for it. I’ll miss seeing my friend Jess, but popcorn and Longmire are calling me.
Besides, it was the day before quarterly taxes were due, so I had to print out forms and write checks various entities: IRS, Arizona Department of Revenue, etc. I did my business’s FICA, state withholding, and federal unemployment forms while I was at it. And filed the form online for my business’s state unemployment stuff. Phew!
Total spent: $25
The one and only thing I got done today was running to the post office to get all of the taxes and other forms mailed. I put tracking on the three for my business ($12.15) but those funds come out of my business account, so weekly funds remained untouched.
Okay, well that and flirting off and on all day with the 25 year old from Saturday. His flirting game is strong.
Other than that, I reconnected on Twitter with an old blogging friend (who I’d lost touch with a couple of years ago) and agreed we should FaceTime the following day. And I watched Longmire.
I invited my friend Kevin over to chill out with me. Like me, he has a lot of time on his hands and even works from home part of the time. So he feels some of the same isolation I do, I think. We had Moscow mules — I will eventually convert everyone I know into fans! — and chatted for a couple of hours before I kicked him out so I could go to bed.
Total spent: $12.15 ($0 out of weekly funds)
Total spent: $278.30 ($266.15 out of weekly funds)
Not ideal to be sure. Monday’s miscellaneous expenses are what really killed my otherwise decent spending streak. But such is life. I still came in at under $280 for seven days. Which is the overall goal. And nothing in the house or guest house broke this week. That’s a plus.
