These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I woke up, worked and worked on the blog. I still felt like I was fighting off a cold, so I didn’t work out.
I had therapy in the morning ($25 copay).
I had the first of my dates in my dating spree (one date per night between Thursday and Monday) that evening, but in the afternoon the guy texted that he had to cancel. He was stuck at work.
I messaged a guy I’d been flirting with on Tuesday to see if he was free last minute. The guy I was seeing on Sunday found out my plans had fallen through and offered to take me out. I was still waiting to hear back from Tuesday’s guy, so I told him I’d get back to him.
Tuesday’s guy never got back to me, so maybe he lost interest? Hard to say if it’s that or he just didn’t see the message. At any rate, one of my newer matches messaged me to see if I wanted to go out that night. I wasn’t super excited about Sunday’s guy, so I said sure. He said he’d text me when he got off work. When was that? Hopefully, by six. “Hopefully” is not a good sign.
At 6:20, I messaged him to see what the status was. At 6:40 he got back to me to say he was still stuck at work. I told him we should reschedule and messaged Sunday’s guy.
Turns out he was still available, but because we were doing everything so late, we didn’t meet up until 8 p.m. I’ll remind you that I’m usually in bed around 9 or 9:30. Sigh.
I paid $9.27 for the Uber to the bar, and he was nice enough to drive me home.
Unfortunately, when he showed up I confirmed what I worried about from his pics: I wasn’t attracted to him. I was on the fence by looking at his pics, which is why I decided to give it a whirl but… Nope.
We had a decent time chatting and playing pool, though the conversation was a little stilted at times. I feel a little bad that I took him up on the offer of a lift home, given that I had already decided against a second date, but oh well.
If he texts me again, I’ll be as polite as possible when I tell him there just wasn’t a spark.
I got home around 10:15 and was in bed by 10:30, but messaged with a Tinder guy for a few minutes and generally took a while to fall asleep.
Total spent: $34.27
So I was pretty tired when I got up for work the next day.
I had a doctor’s appointment at 11:30 ($0 copay).
On the way home, I stopped by Fry’s to get cash back so I’d have cash to tip the masseuse later that day. I had to buy something to get the cash back, so the total was $21.38.
I had my massage (ahhhhh) and tipped $13 out of the cash.
That night I was supposed to meet up with a 38 year old, but he had to cancel. (Click here for the ensuing weird and hilarious drama that happened there.) I got on Tinder and made a new date with a 23 year old.
I spent $11.30 getting to the bar and $17 on drinks. Unfortunately, I got a mainly platonic vibe from this guy (though he’s quiet so maybe I’m misreading him?) but we had a good time playing pool, which I spent $3 of my one dollar bills on.
We got a late start on the date, so we closed down the bar. I passed out around 2:30 a.m.
Total spent: $52.68 ($36.68 out of weekly funds)
Unfortunately, I woke up at 9:30, so I was pretty weary. At noon I went to get my cut and color at the beauty school ($50).
On the way home, I had to stop and get frozen meals. I hadn’t realized I was on my last one when I went to the store on Friday. I spent $14.95.
Then I came home and passed out for two hours. When I woke up, I wanted Thai food so I called my favorite place and got takeout ($11.96).
My Saturday date had never gotten back to me to verify that we were still on, so I got on Tinder and made a date with a 24 year old. I went back to the same bar as the night before because I know there’s always a pool table open and the drinks are reasonably priced (and I can Uber there affordably). Other than remembering my drink, the bartender was kind enough not to say anything about the fact that I was there with a new guy and in my same first date outfit.
We had a good time and I’ll probably see him again. Fun fact: His profile was wrong and he’s actually 22. Making him officially the youngest guy I’ve gone out with. #cougargrowl
The Uber there was $10.15. I spent $17 on drinks, two of my ones from my walking around money, and the Uber back was $10.84.
Total spent: $116.90 ($114.90 out of weekly funds) — ye gods!
I was once again out late (I fell asleep around 3 a.m.) and once again woke up at 9:30. Ugh.
I worked on the blog a little, typing up the Friday would-be-date drama.
I ran out to CVS to use a 40% off coupon before it expired. I got some contact lens solution ($8.79, $5.40 saved savings).
Not much else happened for the rest of the day. I discovered The Magicians on Netflix and seriously binge-watched while eating some of my junk food stash. The tenant gave me six s’mores cupcakes, and I’m doing my best to eat only one a day.
Total spent: $14.19
I finally got a good night’s sleep! First one in what seems like forever. So I worked, worked on the blog and didn’t have to lie back down for a change.
I was only moderately excited about the date I had tonight (23 year old ex-Marine), and I was loving The Magicians. So I decided to wait and see if he texted me to set up a time and place. If he did, I’d go out. If he didn’t, I’d stay in.
Well, I didn’t hear a peep from him, so I binge watched The Magicians all night.
Total spent: $0
Christmas Eve! I got caught up on emails at work, then ran out to the grocery store to get munchies for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I also picked up some OJ and cough drops because I seemed to be coming down with a cold. Whee. I had to run to a few different stores, and the total was $35.57.
I did two loads of laundry, so $7 went into the Washer/Dryer fund.
That evening, I met up with some friends at Denny’s. I spent $5.33 after tip.
We all chatted for a bit, then some of us went to karaoke. I left after about an hour because I had to work in the morning and because my runny nose was starting to get worse.
Total spent: $47.90
Hoo boy. I did not feel good. The cold hit me full force, so I went up to Walgreens first thing and got some cold meds for $7.05.
I alternately worked and slept most of the rest of the day. I was so out of it that I didn’t even get around to opening the presents from my mom until mid-afternoon.
I worked until 7 p.m. and was supposed to go to a friend’s house afterward. But I was exhausted and out of it, so I begged off. I went to bed at 8 p.m. Great holiday.
Total spent: $7.05
Total spent: $272.99 ($254.99 out of weekly funds)
Not a great week for frugality, but not bad — especially considering the Ubering I did.
