These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I didn’t do much during the day, just worked and worked out. I added back the lighter ankle weights so I did the easiest video there was to ease myself in. They’re just 1.5 lbs but my legs need to get used to extra weight again.
The guy I was supposed to go on a date that night with never got back to me about a time, so I played around on Tinder in the afternoon and evening. I ended up matching with one of the guys I’d been seeing before Darryl and I became exclusive. I’d texted him when Darryl and I broke up but never heard back. So I assumed he didn’t want to pick back up where we’d left off. Turns out, he just had a new number.
So he came over and we caught up.
I found out tarte cosmetics was having a sale. I bought some of the company’s primer about 18 months ago and only recently ran out. I tried replacing it with a drugstore version, but that one’s going so fast that it actually makes more financial sense to buy the good stuff (at least, while it’s on sale). One of my tarte eyeshadow palettes was also running low, so I picked up one of those.
Together (plus tax) those were $55.39. Ouch. This meant I had to start a new financial week, but the last one was nine days long, so I’m pretty happy.
Total spent $55.39
I was almost terrifyingly efficient in the morning. I caught up on work (and answered emails as they came in), did laundry, took out the trash, fetched the recycling bin from the curb, emptied the inside recycling can into the bin, and weeded.
The last bit sucked. I did call in my yard guy for Monday morning, but the last time he chided me about letting the weeds get so bad, and they were significantly worse this time. So I had to pull the worst of them ahead of time. I spent 15-20 minutes doing that and had utterly forgotten how much energy it takes. I spent most of the rest of the day feeling weary. I couldn’t even muster the energy to work out.
I had trivia to go to that night, so I sat very still after work and just watched Netflix, chatted with a couple of Tinder guys and otherwise rested until it was time to get ready.
Unfortunately, my body has been extra hungry lately, so my normal meal plan hasn’t been making enough of a dent. In other words, I was ravenous by the time I got to the trivia location. So I ordered a full entrée ($18.93 after tip).
We ended up coming in third since we missed the last question — put the following movies in order of release: This Boy’s Life, Dead Man Walking, My Girl, Pretty Woman — and two other teams got it right.
I came home, chatted with Tinder guys a bit more and crashed at midnight. But not before finding out that at some point during the evening my left contact had fallen out. It’s such a weak prescription that I didn’t even notice a difference. Argh.
Total spent: $18.93
PS. The answer was Pretty Woman, My Girl, This Boy’s Life, Dead Man Walking. We got the first two in the wrong order.
My trivia group was off on a day trip to explore a local town (via its wineries). They tried to convince me to come along, but I don’t drink wine. They repeatedly protested that wine was only the excuse for the trip> But the night before the trip they were discussing the itinerary and, other than meals, the activities were almost exclusively for visiting wineries. So I made the right choice staying home.
Instead, I woke up quite late (10:30 a.m.) and did a little cleaning. A while ago Mom found me a zip strip for the drain, which in the past six or so months has saved me at least $20 in Liquid Plumber. Though it brings up an appalling, gag-reflex-inducing trail of gunk when you use it. I wiped down the sinks, did a little light dusting, ran the Roomba, poured bleach into one of the toilet bowls (if you let the bleach sit for several hours, it dissovles most stains on its own) and called it good. I’m not real into cleaning, and frankly I don’t get the place all dirty with it being just myself.
I called the optometrist and asked them to order a new left contact for me. I considered just leaving it out, but it does make a small amount of difference, and I don’t want my left eye to get weak. So in a few days I’ll apparently be paying $90. Whee.
After that, I settled down to do some blogging. I also paid my city services bill, rounding the amount up to $50 with a donation to the assistance program.
I FaceTimed with the next day’s date for a bit.
I was too sore from Friday’s weeding to work out, which made two days in a row of being off. Which frustrated and upset me and for some reason made me want bad food. So I got pizza and cinnamon sticks again ($19.99).
Then I sat around and watched season 2 of Sabrina on Netflix. I was really enjoying Longmire, but needed a break. It is seven seasons after all.
Total spent: $69.99
I slept in until 9:30, which was lovely. In the morning I realized I needed to cancel my date. He seemed very nice. But he’s on a very different political side than I am, and given all that’s happening in this country right now… Just no.
A different Tinder guy messaged me. He’d had to cancel our last date in early January (three weeks before). I had been kind of lukewarm about him, so I hadn’t followed up and decided to wait to see if he texted me.
He did, and we chatted a bit. This time around I was a lot more interested (partially because he sent a much more clear picture of himself — I’m shallow, remember?), so we agreed to see each other Monday.
I worked out, though I was still pretty sore from weeding. I did stretch beforehand to try to loosen up, but I still had trouble extending my leg for the kicks. Still, I did the best I could then stretched out like crazy and used the foam roller afterward.
Beyond that, I caught up on a bunch of regular TV I’d been neglecting for Longmire and then watched a little Sabrina on Netflix. Food cravings overwhelmed me — stupid delicious cinnamon sticks — so I ordered more of those. (I’ve got to get my willpower back asap.) They were $7.05.
Total spent: $7.05
I woke up and got through all the emails — just in time for the Internet to go out. I called Cox and was told it could be another three hours before the issue was fixed. Great.
So I left to drop off a prescription at CVS and get $60 from the bank for the yard guy who was coming that day.
I got home and the Internet was still out, so I called my mom for a bit to while away some time. Thankfully, the connection came back on line about two hours after it died. So I caught up on emails, and things went relatively smoothly after that.
After work, I got a lip wax ($15 with tip) and picked up my prescription from CVS ($15).
About an hour after I got home, my date for the night cancelled on me. To be fair, he was going to the ER because apparently he was coughing up blood. So… He gets a pass. (Later it turned out his throat was just cut up from so much coughing. So, like, no TB outbreak at least.)
I spent the night watching Sabrina on Netflix and, as I was back on my diet, being miserably hungry.
Total spent: $90
I woke up to 162 emails. Fun! But it turns out 112 of them were submissions from the same person and therefore just required copying and pasting. So I was still caught up on work at a reasonable hour.
The rest of the day passed relatively uneventfully. I finally worked up to the exercise video that uses dumbbells, though I only wore my 1.5 lb ankle weights.
Based on that experience, it’s going to truly suck when I upgrade back to my 5 lb ones.
Then we had trivia! Which we did very poorly at. We still came in fourth somehow, but that’s too far down the list to get any bar cash. Sigh.
In good news, despite the restaurant having terrific pizza (on happy hour special, no less) I managed to keep myself from ordering any. Instead, I had a cider (I try to always order something to support the bar). It was a heinous $6.52 plus tip. The waiter was kind of crappy, so he just got a $1 tip.
When I got home, I stayed up way too late flirt-texting with the cute 25 year old I’m seeing every week or so. Since we don’t see each other much, we end up flirting a lot via text. I fell asleep around 11:30. Ugh.
Total spent: $7.52
I woke up to a sane number of emails this time. So it was a pretty quiet day. I paid a $10 copay for some bloodwork I had done. And otherwise just worked on the blog, lying down for a bit around 11 a.m. to try to compensate for my late night.
It was a rest day on the exercise front. On the one hand, hooray! On the other hand, fewer calories I can rationalize eating. So… It’s a mixed bag.
After work I got groceries ($24.22 plus $1.57 in saved savings). I did bring home a box of Whoppers, so not quite as diet-friendly as I would’ve liked. But I should still come in well under calories burned for the day, so that’s… something?
Other than that, I spent the evening watching TV and texting once again with the cute 25 year old. We made tentative plans to see each other this weekend if a couple of things fall into place.
Total spent: $35.79
Total for the week: $284.67
Not the best spending week, but $105.39 was from utilities (out of my control) and makeup (which I very rarely buy these days). So it’s not like my spending is out of control, I suppose.
How did your spending go this week?
