These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I got up, worked and worked on the blog. I’m feeling a little uninspired lately on subjects to write about, which means my ready-to-go post numbers are dwindling rapidly. Here’s hoping inspiration strikes soon!
It was also the first trivia night in ages, so I was very excited for that.
The Hulu monthly charge was debited from my account ($6.49).
I did a load of laundry ($3.50 to the Washer/Dryer fund).
I went to trivia. We had bar cash, so we ordered several items. After the voucher was applied, there was $1.05 left over and I left a $2 tip. I meant to order a cider too, so that I’d be supporting the bar. But by the time I remembered that, I wasn’t sure whether my head would clear in time to drive. Next time, I guess.
The good news is that we came in second, so we did pretty well for our first night back in about a month.
Total spent: $13.04
I was nearly out of ginger beer, so I ran out to BevMo to get some more ($14.33). On my way home I stopped by the grocery store for hummus, cucumbers and Whoppers. Diet is a little iffy at present but at least hummus is healthy, right? Right? Anyway, I spent $5.68 with an additional $0.99 going to saved savings.
After work I had a massage ($40 plus $15 tip out of my walking around money). I left feeling much better. I’ve decided to increase to semi-monthly massages as a treat for myself.
When I got home, the guy I had a date with that night checked in to verify that we were still on. For reasons too long to get into here — based on reader comments, I’ve decided to do another Tinder post and will catch you up there — I paid for my part of the bill. Which I suppose is only fair in this day and age. I paid $16.03 after tip. Not. worth. it.
Total spent: $92.03 ($77.03 out of weekly funds)
I lounged around all day. Didn’t even do any cleaning. But I did read the book club book, Never Let Me Go. Which it turns out I’d read before — I recognized it almost immediately upon starting — but I couldn’t remember much of. So I reread it. Gotta say, totally worth a reread, which I don’t consider to be true of many books.
Thanks to tipping the masseuse the prior day, I was almost out of walking around money, and I had a party that night where people chip in $5 for pizza. So I ran to the ATM and got out $20.
This was a banner day, by the way, because I worked out for the first time in FIVE WEEKS. And it sucked pretty much as badly as I thought, though I started on an easier routine and left off ankle weights. But at least I got started, right?
I took a Lyft to the party ($9.81 after tip) and had a great time even though the party itself was smaller than the usual ones. We of course ordered pizza — pizza while drunk is truly a wonder — so I spent $5 out of my walking around money for that.
I even met and chatted with a guy who I ended up giving my number to. Not my usual type, but there’s something very appealing about him. Maybe that he has a brain in his head? Stranger things have happened.
My place was basically on his way home, so he was kind enough to drop me off, meaning I didn’t have to pay for a return Lyft.
Total spent: $34.81 ($29.81 out of weekly funds)
I cleaned a little, talked to Mom on the phone and worked out again.
Then I completely ruined the effects of the workout by going and getting pizza and cinnamon sticks ($19.99). It’s a work in progress.
The guy from last night’s party texted to see when I’d be available. I told him a few things were up in the air but I’d let him know Monday or Tuesday once I had a clearer picture.
It’s worth noting that he lost a couple of points by, when I complained that I actively hate working out) said that perhaps I just needed to find a type I truly enjoyed. Like, dude, I’m 41. You think I don’t have the brains to have checked out various types of exercise? I’m sure he was trying to be helpful but sheesh.
Other than that, I sat around and watched TV and generally goofed off. It was quite restorative.
Total spent: $19.99
Woke up to a ton of emails, and work actually kept me relatively busy for a change. Still, I managed to fit in a workout since my friend had cancelled racquetball.
I spent $19.82 on Lyft rides to and from the bar. The date didn’t work out but, again, more on that in a dedicated Tinder post.
Total spent: $19.82
I ran a couple of items to the post office and picked up some medication at CVS. One of the meds was a three-month supply, so it was $111. Looks like I’m going over budget in the Healthcare category this month. Since it was such a large amount, it doesn’t come out of weekly funds. However, the $2.86 medication obviously did.
After about three years of using three large bottles I got from Boxed one Black Friday, I was finally out of body wash. And holy hell, when did that stuff hit $9?! I ended up going with the CVS brand. I had some Extrabux so I paid $2.56 with another $2 going into saved savings.
I got some beauty services done after work for $40.
Beyond that, I did very little. I took a rest day from working out. I ate the last of the frozen meals, meaning I’d need to make a grocery run the following day. And I watched more Longmire on Netflix while playing on Tinder.
I briefly had a date but quickly ended up cancelling. Yet again, more on that in another post.
In happier news, the hot 25 year old from last Saturday came by after work to hang out for a bit. In less happy news, he didn’t get there til 10:30 (he works til 9:45 and his job site about 40 minutes away). So I wouldn’t get enough sleep that night. But… hot 25 year old.
Total spent: $158.42 ($47.42 out of weekly funds)
As predicted, I didn’t get enough sleep but was strangely not sleepy. I did eventually settle down for a nap, but still didn’t feel great enough to exercise. So I guess I’d better really get back into it tomorrow!
I ran to the grocery store for frozen meals, some hummus and a box of Whoppers ($26.34).
Had a hilariously unpleasant interaction with a Tinder guy. Once again, you’ll just have to wait for the next Tinder post.
That evening I had a date with the guy from Saturday’s party. He ended up being just as much fun to talk to as I remembered, so that was good. I spent $18.71 getting to and from the bar. I also spent $4.50 of my walking around money to pay for pool and darts. Seemed only fair since he paid for my drinks.
Total spent: $49.55 ($45.05 out of weekly funds)
Total spent: $387.66 ($252.16 out of weekly funds)
Not a great spending week when looked at as a whole, but that’s really because of that $111 medication. As far as weekly funds go, I came in under my $280/week goal. So I’m pretty happy, especially since the total included the expense of three different dates.
