These spending diaries are a way for me to be more cognizant of my spending. They’re also a peek into my daily life for those who care.
For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $280 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week:
I kept thinking it was Friday for most of the morning. So I kept being sorely disappointed.
I was nearly out of protein bars, so I ordered from Target. At $81.63 it’s too much to come out of weekly funds, and I’m using a discounted gift card I already accounted for in previous months’ budgets so… We’ll call it good.
I worked and worked on the blog. After two nights of good sleep, I finally felt well enough to work out again. Not fun, but glad I did it.
Other than that, nothing much happened. I was flirting with some guys from Bumble (and one from Tinder who went MIA for a while and recently resurfaced).
It looked like the 25 year old and I might hang out, but that fell through. I messaged the guy I saw on Monday but he didn’t get back to me. Admittedly, it was super last minute. Oh well.
At least it means that I went to bed at a reasonable hour.
Total spent: $81.63 ($0 out of weekly funds)
I messaged the guy I was supposed to meet that night. Who hadn’t gotten back to me about whether he was willing to come to my side of town or not. Bumble guys are super laid back about setting things up. So far in both cases plans have been made at the absolute last minute, which is absolutely driving me crazy. I guess there’s an adjustment period, but I’m not sure my uptight, control freak, Type A personality can ever handle things being so up in the air all the time.
The dude ended up cancelling and then unmatching me on Bumble. Guess the fact that I text a fair amount and answer quickly (because I’m boooooored most of the day) freaked him out. Whatever. Don’t want a guy where I have to time my responses. But it still stung a bit.
Beyond that, I worked, worked on the blog and worked out. I ran to a dermatologist appointment, which turned out to have been cancelled. They failed to update my cell phone number the last time I was there — even though I definitely crossed out the old one on the form and wrote the new one — so they texted Tim. Who must’ve thought it was his dermatologist and texted to cancel. Ugh.
Luckily, they got me in and I have enough anti-acne prescription refills for another year. Hooray clear skin!
Then I ran to Fry’s and picked up some groceries and $20 of walking around money (total $47.31).
I had my massage later, and I tipped $15 out of my walking around money.
And here’s where the daily total took a nosedive: I signed up for a yearly plan on Mint Mobile to the tune of $200.79 after taxes/fees. Ouch. But that’s $16.73 a month so… Worth it.
Then I went out with friends. Eesh. I spent $14.90 on Lyft there, and we hit three different bars for a total drink/food tab of $71.59. Owwwww. But it was a good time and I did just increase my going out budget for these types of occasions.
At the bar I ran into a cute (if slightly goofy, but I kinda prefer that?) 26 year old and we exchanged numbers. Maybe he’ll pan out?
I got a lift home from my friend Leila, who’s practically my neighbor at just a mile and a half away. I fell asleep at 3:30 a.m. Egads!
Total spent (ugh): $349.59 ($62.31 out of weekly funds)
I woke up at 8 a.m. Nope. Not okay. I chugged some water (my skull felt a wee bit tight on my brain, so clearly I was dehydrated), ate half a protein bar and fell back asleep for three hours.
Got up, tabulated the previous day’s spending, felt very sick (and not from the alcohol the night before) and ran to Target to pick up my protein bars. On the way home, I stopped at Fry’s for more hummus and some Whoppers. The total was $6.40.
I talked to my date for the evening and he said he’d be done working on his car and getting a haircut around 4, so I got mostly ready by then (just waiting on makeup) and waited to hear from him. At 5, he messaged to say he’d just finished with the car stuff, so we’d better reschedule for the following night. Ugh.
So I went and hung out with my friend Kevin, who’d tweaked his back a few days ago and was going stir crazy. We had a good time chatting. I picked up the makings for Moscow mules and a couple of snacks for us ($21.77).
I texted with the guy from the bar the previous night, but I’m not sure when I’ll see him because he works til 9 p.m. during the week. I guess we’ll see if I get bored enough to sacrifice some sleep. If not, there’s always next weekend if he hasn’t lost interest. Guys have short attention spans.
Total spent: $28.17
I woke up at 9:30 a.m. and did a little work on the blog. Despite a good night’s sleep I still wasn’t feeling great, so I skipped my workout.
I texted the guy from the bar on Friday and we set up a date for 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Guess he meant to type “8 p.m.” when he told me when his shift is over? Eh whatever.
My date for the night texted at 1 p.m. to verify that we were still on. I sat around, resting up and watch The Americans.
At 5 p.m. I got myself to the bar and…. Waited for 40 minutes. No guy or text was forthcoming. So yeah, that was fun.
I texted the guy from Friday to see if he wanted to switch to that night, but he was busy with family stuff. So we agreed that we were still on for Monday night.
I went home ($20.57 for both Lyft rides). Which just annoyed me even more. If the guy had extended the simple courtesy for a quick text, I’d have saved myself $20! Ugh.
I did a little more playing on Bumble, chatted a bit and even set up a date for Wednesday in a single conversation (will miracles never cease!). I went to bed at 9:30 p.m.
Total spent: $20.57
I worked and worked on the blog a bit. I didn’t feel great, but I couldn’t skip three workouts in a row. So I did the video without using any ankle weights as a compromise.
Then I just killed time until my 8:30 p.m. date. So. late.
The date was actually a lot of fun, but I spent way too much.
I saved a little by going to the park ‘n ride and taking the light rail down for $1 (instead of taking a Lyft to the bar). But once I got to the bar, I paid for my own drinks. I like to do this when the drinks are pricier, and I really enjoy the $10 cocktails at the bar we were at. In the end I paid $33.60 there after tip.
Then the guy wanted me to check out a great whiskey sour made at a different bar nearby. The bartender there misunderstood when I handed him my card and charged me for both drinks. I didn’t bother to correct him because I’m like 99% sure I make more money than the guy I was out with. So I paid $22.55 after tip. Sigh.
It had gotten pretty late by the time the date ended. Specifically, it was slightly after 2 a.m. Taking the light rail at that hour (let alone riding the full 30 minutes through all of the stops) didn’t seem appealing. So I took a Lyft home for $14.54.
Total spent: $71.69 — yeah, I think I’ll stick with vodka tonics and nearby bars for a while
I woke up, got through emails and lay back down for an hour. Then stumbled around through the rest of the day, lying down whenever time permitted. I didn’t even bother with my energy medication because I knew it wouldn’t make a dent in the fatigue.
I got some takeout ($9.34) because I was starving and nothing around the house sounded like it would fill me up (stupid diet food). Beyond that, I sat around and chilled out after work.
I took a Lunesta and fell asleep around 8 p.m. but woke up wide awake at 9:30 p.m. for some reason. The 25 year old had texted to say to let him know if I was still awake when he got off work at 10 p.m. and he’d swing by.
It was a terrible idea to invite him over, I suppose, but I also knew I was stuck awake for a while. Might as well have company, right? So I finally fell asleep for good around 12:45 a.m. Ugh.
Total spent: $9.34
Unsurprisingly, I was tired. Not a great start, since I had a date that night. At least it started at a very reasonable 7 p.m. But it was all the way downtown, so I was once again looking at taking the light rail. Hopefully, both ways this time.
I rested as much as I could during the day. The powder I use to cover my gray roots ($10.82 after tax) and my intuitive blush ($22.53 after tax) were both almost out, so I bought replacements. (As an Amazon affiliate, I may be compensated for orders placed through my links.)
I drove to the park ‘n ride and took the light rail downtown ($1) and had two drinks on the date ($25.85 after tip). It was a fun date, though there was a lull in the middle where we struggled for conversation. We managed to salvage it and are planning to see each other again. But since he’s about to move apartments this weekend, I’m not sure when that will be.
Unfortunately, I missed the light rail by about three minutes. I cursed as I watched it go by when I was about a block and a half away.
When I reached the station, I looked up how long it’d be til the next one. It ran at 12:40 a.m. (45 minutes away), so I’d get home at 1:21 a.m. Yeah, no. I took a Lyft for $14.61 to the park ‘n ride.
I was starving, so I stopped by Jack in the Box on the way home for some fries ($4.22).
Total spent: $79.03
Total spent: $640.02 ($271.11 out of weekly funds)
Ouch ouch ouch. Too much drinking this week (well, drinking in pricey bars, specifically), though the protein bars and yearly cell phone bill obviously didn’t help. But I definitely need to stick to cheap bars in the near future!
