I’ve had a lot of free time on my hands lately — and not wanting to think a whole lot — so I’ve found myself perusing the Black Friday ads.
As you may recall, I recently got my new duvet cover and pillows. (As an Amazon affiliate, I am compensated for orders placed through my links.) Unfortunately, the sheets I have now kinda clash with the blue. They’re only visible in a couple spots, but it’s bugging me. So I’m on the hunt for blue sheets. And wow but regular-priced sheets — especially king-size — are expensive.
I checked out Overstock.com during one of its many sales, but even when I was able to find dark blue sheets, all the affordable ones (read: less than $45 — which, even that is is ouchy) are described in reviews are very thin and tearing easily. Target, Kohl’s and JCPenney prices aren’t as cheap as you’d expect either. And when I did find deals of seemingly quality sheets, I couldn’t find any of the right shades of blue. Sigh.
So I started searching the leaked Black Friday ads on BlackFriday.com. And that’s where I found the Kohl’s deal that will have its king size sheets at $29.99 plus 15% off coupon — so around $28 after tax.
I’m a little bummed because I had previously seen the same sheets for $16.99 all sizes in a scan — but as best I can tell, I had been looking at the 2019 scan by accident. Still, $28 for king sheets is a darn good deal. And I’ll get $1.02 back from Mr. Rebates for two sheets. Not a lot, but every little bit helps.
That’s about all I technically “need” this Black Friday.
But.
Target has a deal offering a 20% coupon when you place a $50+ order on Black Friday. So if I buy five boxes (about $60 worth) on Black Friday, I can get a 20% off coupon good a week or two later. During that, I’ll buy six boxes (the maximum per order and around $73), get the 20% off and apply the $40 of gift cards I got from the last time I took advantage of a Target deal. So I’ll pay around $18 for $76 worth of product. [Evil laugh]
Of course, I already have a backlog of protein bars from the aforementioned recent Target deal. But I eat two a day, so I’ll get through them all before too long.
So sheets and protein bars are my definite purchases for Black Friday.
Then the big question came in: Did I want to take advantage of Black Friday deals to replace my aging washer and dryer?
My current units are functioning just fine, but they’re also 14 years old. So they could last another five years, or they could die tomorrow. Or worse, the day after the Black Friday sales stop.
So it’s a tough call: If they still have life left in them, it seems silly to buy now; but it also seems silly to wait until they die if it means they could be off sale.
Of course, Home Depot seems to have sales pretty much every week, but it’s hard to say how good they are compared to Black Friday deals. I went to the site on Monday to see if I could compare, but alas Black Friday pricing is already in effect sitewide. So there’s no telling how the current deals compare to the usual ones.
I lamented this quandary to a friend. She convinced me to just roll the dice and wait for the current machines to die. After all, I have the money tucked away (I put $3.50 into a savings account every time I do a load of laundry), and there are frequent enough deals that it makes sense to just get the full life out of my current machines.
So I think I’m going to skip Black Friday appliance shopping. Thank goodness.
The only other thing I might snoop around for is a headboard. For some reason, this new duvet set makes it more apparent that I need one. It didn’t bother me with the comforter set I had previously. But now… Now I look at the wall and feel the stark lack of headboard.
So my relatively affordable duvet cover means investing in new sheet and wanting a headboard. If you give a mouse a cookie…
So I’ll check out Amazon, Overstock.com and a few other sites to see what they’re offering price-wise. If anyone has any other website suggestions, please feel free to mention them in the comments.
As always, my Black Friday purchases aren’t exactly thrilling — and thanks to people’s idiocy during the early days of the pandemic, I can’t do my usual stock-up on toilet paper — but they will result in some great savings. Which I suppose is all that matters.
Anyone else have their eye on a good Black Friday deal?

My wife and I built 2 headboards for around $45 each. We drew a simple curve on a piece of cheap plywood. Then we layered some thin foam, then batting, and our choice of fabric. We did this face down and stapled it all with a staple gun. We realized we only needed to cover half the board due to the bed height. We have 2, so we are able to switch them in different rooms if any colors change. Let me know if this photo link doesn’t work. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WGa57gS_3Apzb7Ur…

I’m not doing a lot of gift giving and the big purchased for Mother-in-law is split three ways and now purchased. I’m trying to think about my stocking u that might be needed to use the layered coupons but it is overwhelming to think about.

Abby, I bought a really cool wrought iron headboard from Pier 1 almost 20 years ago and still have it. I don’t know if stores in your area are still open, but you could go on their website and see what they have. *sigh* I miss the old Pier 1 inventory.

I miss it too!

So far as I know, Pier One went belly up years ago. You might check to see whether there’s a Cost Plus Imports store, though, or a Tuesday Morning. They have similar products in inventory, and at reduced prices.

I haven’t looked at the ad scans yet, but I might this weekend. Am also going to get the actual newspaper (#oldschool) and take the ads over to share them with niece’s kids, to look for affordable deals for momma gifts.
Most of my stuff is either bought or rewards points to be cashed in for gift cards. But I will definitely be looking for small items if the deals are good enough. In particular at Walgreens (although last year the pickings were slim) and at Ace Hardware (which just replaced the True Value Hardware in our neighborhood) because they’ve had good Black Friday deals in the past. Here’s hoping.

I”m happy to hear you got the coordinating sheets. I always feel good when I update my sheets/bedspread, etc. There is something luxurious about getting into bed with a nice set of bedding, and it sounds like you got a good deal. I’m not really sure if I’m going to do much on Black Friday. Nothing has really caught my eye this year.

Unless I see something SUPER cheap – there will be no BF shopping for me. I need nothing, only want a few things (Roomba, upgrade Fitbit) — but not enough to spend the money, even at a good sale.
I’ll be looking for deals on things I use a lot – like my protein powder, or toilet paper. #boring
