For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $250 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week.
I woke up to an annoying occasional chirp that kept me in and out of consciousness. Eventually I figured out it was the smoke alarm. I took it down and took out the battery, only to find I was out of 9 volts. Argh.
I went back to sleep for a while, then got up grumblingly. Thankfully, I got caught up on work pretty quickly.
I had slept pretty well, so I decided to finally sign up for a slot in that day’s Aqua Zumba class at my gym.
I spent the day working and messaging with friends. I meant to run out to CVS, but ended up deciding to just do it after the gym.
After work I rested up a bit until the 5 p.m. class. Which kicked my butt big time. Apparently, the substitute instructor is far more energetic than the usual guy. So when I got out of the class, my legs were wobbly and my abs were rubbery.
As I was about to leave the locker room, Aaron videocalled. I told him I was headed out. I told him I’d call him back when I was home.
I stopped at the grocery store to get some munchies for $8.69. I didn’t have the energy to also go to CVS. Oops.
I got home and called Aaron back. And is why I am now dealing with a no-contact situation.
The call lasted 90 or so minutes, then I spent a while venting to friends and so didn’t get into bed until about 10:30. I cried a bit and fell asleep around 11 p.m.
Total spent: $8.69
By the time I got caught up on work, it was noon. I messaged Aaron to say I needed him to call me when he had time. I didn’t want to tell him via text that we couldn’t be in each other’s life. It seemed harsh.
I messaged my friend/personal trainer to let him know I needed to skip the session that day. I was very flat from the workout the day before and certainly I wasn’t going to be in a better mood once I talked to Aaron.
I also let my friends know I wasn’t going to be up to going out with them that night. We’d planned on going to this outdoor complex with food and bar pop-up stands plus a film place, which was playing Jaws that night. Somehow, none of us had ever seen it.
I didn’t hear back from Aaron until 2 p.m. He said sure he would. I asked for an ETA and he said he was running around doing errands, was it anything urgent.
I said uh yeah, sorta.
At 4:30 I gave up because the suspense was killing me. So I just explained in a quick message that it was too painful trying to be friends.
He wrote back shortly thereafter to say okay he agreed. Then another message saying that hopefully it would be the best for both of us.
But then he called me shortly thereafter and was still just… agreeing. He said if that’s what I needed, he was all for it. But did I mean for a while or forever? I said I didn’t know, probably forever. Since he was driving while talking, he nearly got in an accident and said he’d have to call me back.
Not sure what there was to talk about?
I had been lying down for a few hours at this point and started feeling okay. Also, I really needed a drink. Or three. So I let my friends know I’d meet them for Jaws and liquor after all.
Aaron didn’t call back. I guess he realized it was silly to talk about not talking.
A friend picked me up, and I used my phone to buy a ticket for the movie. It was $15.74 after tax. Ouch!
When we got there, we couldn’t find any street parking — even metered spots were full. The friend decided to just pay $10 to park, so I sent her $5 by Venmo for my share.
I got a drink immediately ($11.27 after tip) and ordered a pizza from one of the food places ($15.20).
Going-out expenses don’t normally get taken out of weekly funds. But I figured I would’ve probably gotten takeout or some grocery store munchies even if I’d stayed home, so I did deduct the $15.20 from weekly funds.
I later had two more drinks ($29 after tip). Then after the movie, my friends wanted to go to another bar, so I got a drink there for $12.36 after tip.
We then all went home, though we agreed to try to do brunch the next day. I got home around 12:30 a.m., but I was fussing on the phone trying to find some new dating app matches.
I fell asleep around 2 a.m. Craaaaap.
Total spent: $88.57 ($35.94 out of weekly funds)
I woke up at 10 a.m. and messaged to see when we were doing brunch. We agreed on 11:30 a.m., and I had a few things that really needed to get done before that.
I changed the sheets (looooong overdue), then finally got around to buying more shampoo before Ulta’s 20% off coupon expired. I got the big container, so it was $33.01.
I then ran to CVS to pick up some face wash which was almost empty and (finally) a 9 volt battery for my smoke alarm. Using Extrabux I got everything for free, saving $21, so that went into Saved Savings.
I met my friends for brunch. I’ve gotten much more enthusiastic about the idea since I was reminded that mimosas are a thing. But this time I felt a little dehydrated, plus I was worried we wouldn’t be there long enough for me to sober up.
So I just got French toast ($14.33 after tip) and it was delicious. We commiserated a bit with my friend.
On my way home from brunch, I hit a 25% off sale at Goodwill. Unfortunately, despite what I read online, the fitting rooms were still closed. So I had to try everything on over my shirt in front of the long mirror by the dressing rooms.
I ended up getting one shirt and a much-needed pair of flats for $9.93.
I then came home and rested for a while until I could work out. I went later than usual, so I didn’t get home until 5:30 p.m.
At 9 p.m. (so hour 10 of the move-out) my friend Brandon messaged the group to see if anyone wanted to meet up. We decided to meet downtown at 10 p.m.
I was very hungry, so I spent $12.50 on a delicious quesadilla (which did come out of weekly funds) and then $22.25 on some drinks (which did not).
We then went to a second place to close out the night. I had a drink plus an epic dish called the Sugar Rush: two grilled donuts, topped with vanilla bean ice cream, drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce. And yes, it was as delicious as it sounded. Thankfully, Brandon volunteered to eat the second donut. Because I absolutely could’ve and would’ve eaten it myself. And regretted it. Well, the calories, anyway.
The total there was $26.22.
I got home at 2:30ish. I was asleep around 2:45 a.m.
Total spent: $139.24 ($90.77 out of weekly funds) owwww
I had set my alarm for 10:30 a.m. since I had a noon lunch date. But I woke up at 10:10 a.m. I got laundry started immediately, so $3.50 went into the Washer/Dryer fund.
I updated my spending spreadsheet and this spending diary, hopped in the shower and got ready for my date.
The guy was nice and funny, but I wasn’t attracted to him in person. Sigh.
I came home to work on the blog. Then I just sort of lay around and goofed off, since I didn’t have the energy to work out.
I played on the dating apps and talked to some guys. Then I ran to Fry’s and got some munchies for $9.05.
I came home, watched TV and chatted more on the apps. I had a belly full of cheese and pretzel M&Ms when one guy I was bantering with well invited me to meet him for fro-yo.
So I threw on a t-shirt that was relatively flattering even with a distended belly, and we met up around 8:30 p.m. We ended up talking til 10:30, and we agreed to meet up again soon.
He’s not a guy to get very serious about, as he’s in the middle of a divorce. But like me he wants a connection with someone, and honestly at this point I’m less concerned with the intensity/duration of a connection than just practicing finding quality guys.
I passed out around 11 p.m.
Total spent: $12.55
I woke up and got through emails before too long. Then I played more on the apps, talking to some men who seemed promising.
I took advantage of a Walgreens sale which was BOGO50 on Neutrogena sunscreen plus 15% off $25+. So I bought four two-packs of sunscreen for a total of $40.25 after tax. Which is ridiculously low.
The premium for my dental insurance hit my card for $32.
After work, I had my video session with my personal trainer. Lunges were involved. I do not forgive him.
Then I chilled out for a bit watching TV and eating. After that, I got ready to go to my MeetUp event: drag queen bingo. It was hilarious and fun. I sent the emcee a $3 tip by Venmo after she did a great number in between rounds.
The bar didn’t have food, and I didn’t feel like drinking. So I just had water. But the waitress still had to take care of me, so at the end of the night I gave her a $2 tip. That came out of my walking around money, which was already accounted for in a previous spending diary. So it’s not counted as coming out of a weekly funds.
I got home around 10:30 p.m.
I used the massage gun before I went to bed to help counteract the lunges. I was asleep by 11:30 p.m.
Total spent: $5 ($3 out of weekly funds)
I got up and dealt with emails pretty quickly. But it was time to do the task I loathed: emailing approximately one zillion people to nag them to review cases we’d sent in.
I was a bit sore from the lunges, so I used the massage gun on my legs and glutes.
I chatted a little with dating app guys but tried to mainly focus on the task at hand. I got through about 40% of the cases I needed to check. The rest would have to wait for the next day.
After work, I went and worked out. Then I came home and hurried to get ready for the date.
We met for pho — I was so excited he chose that because I hadn’t had it in ages — and we sat around chatting long after we were done eating. We were there for around two hours, in fact. (There were plenty of other tables, so it wasn’t all that rude.)
After that, we went to get dessert. But ColdStone doesn’t have tables anymore (inside or out) so we just stood leaning on his car and talking for a while.
It was a great date. Even if I almost died from blushing. He spent at least 10% of the 3.5 hour date complimenting me. I’m pretty sure I’m not exaggerating. And he didn’t try to get me into bed, so I guess they were pretty genuine.
After I got home, I texted him saying I had a great time. We discussed a second date. I said I thought I’d be free Friday, but I’d check with my friends and let him know.
I used the massage gun again, then fell asleep around 10:30 p.m.
Total spent: $0
Unfortunately, it’s apparently not a good idea to stand around for an hour after working out leg muscles that were already slightly sore. At least I think that’s why my Restless Leg Syndrome went crazy around 12:30 a.m.
I used the massage gun, but they were still upset. So I went and used the foam roller which helped a bit. But I also realized I was dehydrated. Perhaps standing around for an hour in 98-degree heat without water wasn’t the smartest move.
I emptied what was left of my water bottle (maybe 10 oz) and filled it up and drained those 22 oz. I filled it up again and but realized it wasn’t doing the trick fast enough. So I used one of the Liquid IV packets — thanks to the readers who suggested those — and drained that 16 oz in one go. Though that was partly because it’s just not the greatest flavor. Still… yeah definitely a little dehydrated.
I grabbed some crackers and read for a little bit while I waited for the water to kick in. I fell back asleep around 1:30 a.m.
I woke up exhausted, hoping I could catch up on work quickly and take a nap. Unfortunately, customers kept so rudely sending in emails making me work.
At 11:30 a.m. I ran out to pick up my retainer from the dentist. This should help me avoid needing adult braces, which would be far more expensive than the $300 for a top and bottom retainer. But still… ouch.
I came home and chatted with the guy I’d had frozen yogurt with on Sunday. We agreed he’d come over and we’d have some food when I was done with my massage.
I finished up work then headed out to Ulta to pick up the shampoo I’d bought Saturday. Then I went to my massage. Ahhhh. I tipped $15, but it was from the cash in my wallet. So it doesn’t count as coming out of weekly funds.
I signed back up for the $50 auto-charge system. That gets me one massage a month, and any more that month are only $40.
I came home, and the guy came over about half an hour later. We chatted, and he’d brought Thai food — far more than was necessary. So I had a bunch of leftovers.
After he left, I lay around playing on the dating app until about 9:30 p.m. I got ready for bed and was asleep around 10:15 p.m.
Total spent: $365 ($50 out of weekly funds)
Total spent: $619.05 ($200.95 out of weekly funds)
Ouch. Not a cheap week. Obviously, the retainer was a big part of it. But going out two nights in a row plus having brunch wasn’t great either. Still, as long as I’m making good headway in saving for retirement and the future in general, it’s good to make sure I enjoy the present as well.
How did everyone else’s spending go?
