For those who are new, my style of “spending” is a little convoluted. I have two checking accounts. I keep the majority of my money in the secondary account, transferring $250 a week into the main account. But I charge everything to the card to maximize rewards. As charges accrue, I transfer money out of the main account into the secondary one. Then I make a weekly payment on my credit card.
A tad confusing, perhaps, but it works for me. Anyway, here’s how spending went this week.
I woke a bit groggy but well-rested for the third day in a row. That was a nice change of pace.
I got up and answered customer emails and dealt with my other work duties. Even with that, it was only about 11 a.m. and I was all caught up.
I bought an extra undereye concealer from Becca Cosmetics. The company is going out of business as of September, and this product is amazing. So while my current concealer is barely touched, I decided to get one more and hope it doesn’t dry out by the time I need it. It’s kind of a paste anyway (you put some on one finger and press two fingers together to warm it up before applying it) so I think it’ll be okay.
The price was $28.80.
The day was crawling by, but I think I was just eager to get a massage — and get to trivia. One person had dropped out that morning, but that still left eight people joining me that night.
The day was finally done, and I went to my massage. It was prepaid, so I just paid $15 cash out of my wallet as a tip.
I came home, made myself presentable and left for trivia.
All of the remaining eight people showed up, which was awesome. Even more awesome: We got 1st place!
I had ordered a sandwich, which was $14.12 after tax. But I know taking care of a big group is rarely fun for servers, and she kept up on everyone’s water and such very well. So I tipped $4.
I got home at 9:30 p.m. and was in bed by 10. I fell asleep mercifully quickly.
Total spent: $61.92 ($46.92 out of weekly funds)
I woke up with a fourth night of good sleep under my belt. So nice! And going to be ruined that night because I was going to see Aaron.
I got through work and messaged Aaron. He confirmed we were still on. I told him that I had to be back in Tempe the next night for a MeetUp event, so I asked if I could just hang with him during the day and then amuse myself until karaoke. He was amenable, saving me a 40-mile roundtrip. Phew!
So this meant I had to pack not just my overnight stuff, but makeup and the outfit I would wear to karaoke and hair products and… Oy.
I needed some more facial moisturizer and a jug of hand soap to refill my dispensers — yes, I live an exciting life — so I went to check CVS’s site before I would head out to the store. But I discovered, the moisturizer was significantly discounted online. So I bought both items and had them shipped to me. After coupons and Extrabux it was only $6.43, and $17.49 went into Saved Savings.
I went out and returned some Amazon items at Kohl’s. Then I stopped by Big O Tires about the tire issue.
When they confirmed the tires needed replacing, I made an excuse and then called my mechanic to set up an appointment for Monday, since I’d rather give them the money.
I finished my day and left for Aaron’s around 5 p.m. We mainly just chilled out, and munched on some takeout leftovers he had. We crashed around 10 p.m.
Total spent: $23.83
We lazed around in the morning, and Aaron ordered breakfast for us. After eating, we went back to bed and napped. I could get used to this.
Around 11 a.m. we headed out to a bowling alley because Aaron has been enjoying the activity and wants an indoor hobby. We showed up while the pro shop was still closed, so we had to twiddle our thumbs for 20 minutes. After that, the pro shop guy wanted to watch Aaron bowl a couple of frames to get an idea of his form. It also allowed Aaron to try some shoes, since there was a ball/shoes/bag deal going on.
I played on my phone and finally it was all done. We’d been there almost 90 minutes. Eesh.
The $32 charge for my dental insurance hit my card.
On the way back to Aaron’s we stopped to get water. I bought us a couple flavors of ice cream (Water ‘n Ice stores have a variety of products here) for $12.18. Then I ordered some delivery for lunch ($37.02).
Aaron rented Birds of Prey — my suggestion since he likes Harley Quinn and we plan to see the new Suicide Squad — which was fun, if rather violent. Then we lazed around some more until it was time for me to get ready for the karaoke event.
It was a crossover event from a friend of mine’s other MeetUp group. Only two people had RSVPed and one had dropped out the day before. I’d been feeling lazy, so I had kind of hoped the other guy would drop out too. But he was still signed up, so I made myself look presentable and left for the event, which was mercifully close to Aaron’s place.
And of course, as soon as I pulled into my parking space, I got a message from the remaining RSVPer that he wouldn’t be able to make it. Sigh. But I was already there, so I went in.
I did have fun talking to my friend and the person organizing the event, who was a member of my MeetUp group. We chatted as best we could over the noise. I also ordered some fries. After tax and tip, it was $6.63.
I left around 10:15. I might’ve left later but I was waiting for my friend and the organizer to do their Bad Romance duet.
I was in bed about 20 minutes later and fell asleep quickly. I hope that trend lasts.
Total spent: $87.83
I woke up at 6:30 a.m. because Aaron was moving around, but I lay in bed for about 20 minutes in denial that I was officially awake.
I took off and got home around 7:30 a.m. Josie was very excited to see me. (My tenant had fed her the previous day.) It was an overtime day, so I got to work and got caught up in about 45 minutes.
After that, I dealt with emails as they very occasionally came in. Weekends are pretty quiet, thankfully.
I Facetimed with my mom for a while. After that, I made myself finally go pick up a new contact lens that had come in… two weeks prior? Oops.
On the way there, I stopped at Fry’s and got $11.91 of munchies. Then I found out the place was closed Sundays. Argh!
I got home, answered the two emails that had come in, and then my friend Jen called. We talked for about 90 minutes. I hung up with her and started watching some TV.
I finally got around to starting a new Netflix account. The old one was still under Tim’s email address, though I was paying for it. So I finally got a new one and went down to just one screen. So now I’d pay just $10.07 a month instead of $15.17.
Then Aaron videocalled. I told him I couldn’t talk long because I was, frankly, all talked out for the day. So we kept it short, and I just watched TV until bedtime.
At bedtime, Aaron called back to chat. We ended up talking some, but then I was messaging people until late. In fact, I put the phone down until 11:30 p.m. but it took me at least an hour to fall asleep.
Total spent: $22.08
I tried to sleep in a bit, but Josie kept meowing every 10 or so minutes. I was not in a good mood when I woke up. I had to call the mechanic and cancel the appointment I’d made because I was exhausted and didn’t trust myself to drive.
I had finished catching up on emails and messaged with a friend some. Then I napped a little and felt slightly better afterward.
Aaron videocalled and we chatted for a while, but we both needed to lie down for a bit.
My friend Jen called and talked to me for a while. Later I messaged Aaron, and we agreed to see each other the next day.
I was thoroughly exhausted — Jen and I were talking about some emotional stuff — so I couldn’t leave the house to get food, and I couldn’t make myself eat anything at home. I eventually gave in and ordered some delivery for $24.57 after tax and tip. It would last two meals, so it wasn’t quite as bad as it sounded.
I went to bed at 9:15 p.m. but I couldn’t fall asleep for probably at least 90 minutes.
Total spent: $25.47
I was supposed to take Josie to the vet for her dental cleaning and semi-annual exam. But I had slept poorly again, so I called and canceled. I had to be able to make the appointment with my psychiatrist, and I couldn’t do both.
I napped a little bit, but got up before too long.
It took a while to get caught up on emails. More kept coming as I answered the ones. Why does this only seem to happen when I’m exhausted and need to lie down?
I finally got caught up and putzed around for a bit before it was time for my psychiatrist appointment where we agreed that my new dosage seemed to be working well, so we’d leave things as-is. There was a $25 copay.
After that, I got gassed up the car ($32.23 with $1.10 in saved savings from a grocery rewards discount). I’d forgotten to order a second icing for the cinnamon sticks from the previous night’s delivery. So I dropped by the restaurant and bought a second one for $0.54. I used change in my wallet.
Then I came home and called Aaron who had called while I was out and about. We agreed he’d come over that afternoon after my personal training session.
I changed the sheets and cleaned a toilet. Because I’m a swanky host like that.
Changing the sheets also reminded me to buy some Bounce dryer sheets that are supposed to help your clothes repel pet hair. (As an Amazon associate I am compensated for purchases through my links.) That was $9.68, but I had a gift card from a rewards program. So that amount went into Saved Savings.
Aaron got here around 5 p.m. and we sat around and chatted about things. He ordered dinner.
He fell asleep around 9 p.m., but I was messaging with a friend, so I didn’t fall asleep for another hour. ha
Total spent: $68.55 ($68.01 out of weekly funds)
I woke up to find Aaron gone.
Later I found out I’d been snoring very badly and he’d barely slept. My snoring has gotten worse lately, so it may be the extra 15ish pounds I’m carrying or the season allergies or… who knows?
Regardless, something needed to be done, so I ordered some Breathe Right strips. (Again, as an Amazon associate, I am compensated for purchases through my links.) I spent $8.66 and had $3.28 of savings from a coupon and the remainder of my Amazon gift card.
I left for my lip wax. The wax was part of a prepaid package, so I didn’t spend anything there. But I did tip $3.
On the way home, I swung by my mechanic. They ordered four tires, which would apparently be there on Thursday. I paid $419.23. A good deal for tires plus installation, but still… ouch.
I came home and dealt with emails and generally killed time during the day. After work, I ran to the grocery store for a few things. I had a 25% off coupon for fresh produce, so I got a bunch of strawberries even though their “sale” price was only $0.50 off. Aaaaand then I forgot to use the coupon. Sigh.
The total was $17.58.
I came home and Aaron videocalled. Then my friend Jen called.
By the time I hung up with her, I only had about 40 minutes to eat and relax with some TV before having to get ready for trivia. But at least I got a little chill time.
It was just me and the couple who have been my mainstays at events, god bless ’em. But we still managed to come in second. Yay!
The $15 credit had to be applied to the bar tab then and there, and I’d only had a cider. So the waitress combined our bill and added the credit. Which means I paid $0. Unfortunately, I also had $0 in cash to leave a tip. So I hope the couple is generous in that regard.
I got home, and called Jen because she’d had some life drama. So we talked about that while I got ready for bed.
We said good night around 10:30 p.m. and I was asleep almost immediately.
Total spent: $451.75 ($32.52 out of weekly funds)
Total spent: $741.43 ($306.66 out of weekly funds)
Argh! Another high spend week (even ignoring the tires). About $107 was mundane expenses (gassing up the car, dryer sheets, snoring strips and medical expenses) but most of the rest was either junk food at the grocery store or going out/takeout. So… not great.
How has everyone else’s spending been going?
