Well, I’m a little later than usual to report the previous month’s spending. It barely still counts as “the previous month.” But at any rate, it’s once again time to offer all financial voyeurs a peek at my monthly spending – in this case: mid-December through mid-January.
These reports are also a good chance for me to reflect on whether my dollars are going to the right places. So without further ado…
Okay, but what went into all those numbers? Mostly boring things, sorry.
Just barely over in this category, which I feel okay about — especially because $27.01 of that went into Saved Savings. That amount consisted of using some rewards program Apple gift cards to buy songs, CVS savings from coupons and my CarePass, using a gift card for some takeout.
Other items included:
- The last part of my mom’s Christmas present (a $50 donation to a charity).
- My Ann Taintor monthly wall calendar and Thoughts of Dog daily calendar for $29.31 total. (As an Amazon affiliate, I am compensated for purchases made through my links.)
- A box of 52 Swiffer cloths for $14.38. (Again, as an Amazon affiliate I am compensated for purchases made through my links.
- Netflix for $9.76.
- A sick friend (we thought it was COVID) got a dozen gourmet cookies delivered to her door for $31.44.
So while I did go over a bit here, none of it was remotely reckless spending. Just very boring expenses.
Again, slightly over but for a good reason.
In addition to the usual $30 for /service plans on the main house and guest house HVAC units, I had the $186.30 charge for the electrician. Which was a godsend, in fact.
Each time I do a load of laundry, I put $3.50 into my Washer/Dryer fund. This month I did five thrilling loads, so I came in a little under.
Phew, just barely under the limit here. Rising gas prices and running around the valley for trivia really add up. I had to fill up twice this month. But I use Get Upside, so at least I got a bit of money back. (If anyone chooses to join, please consider using my referral code 2TKBA.)
Just Josie’s Banfield plan. I pay $39.95 a month, which is basically the cost of her vaccines and yearly dental cleaning anyway. So I might as well get free vet visits in case of other issues.
I’m really only under budget here because I keep pushing back my haircut at the beauty school. They cut it a bit shorter than usual last time, so it’s not too bad. But it’s definitely getting to the breaking point.
Anyway, I just had my one $40 beauty service (including tip). So yay for saving money, but gah too much hair!
Wowza, waaaay over here. I just had a bunch of items that I needed this month. The big one was another large container of collagen powder, which was $35.99 before tax. (Another reminder that as an Amazon associate I am compensated for purchases through my links.) But also magnesium supplements, sunscreen, powder to cover gray roots in between dyes and a few other random things.
So again, not exactly exorbitant spending.
I did pretty well here. Probably because I actually stuck to my diet for most of the month. Junk food adds up pretty quickly.
As a reminder, this isn’t the only expense for food. I also order around $80 of protein bars a month from Target. However, I use discounted gift cards to pay for those, which have been accounted for in other spending reports.
Again, amazing how sticking to a diet keeps costs low. I got takeout five times this month (but one was with a gift card and thus not included here), so the costs were relatively low.
Over budget here simply because I waited slightly too long to pay my city services bill and had to pay for both months’ at once. Oops.
Okay very very far over budget here. But $106.76 of the excess $155.14 was to pay for six more months of MeetUp. Not the cheapest hobby, but worth it in my opinion.
Speaking of Meetup, six trivia events added up to $64.15, so I’m supporting the venue without going crazy on spending.
The But the good news is it meant a) I was socializing a fair amount (with other vaccinated folks) and b) I got a lot of bang for my bucks.
Then there was a night I joined a friend of mine at a Facebook group event. I spent almost as much on the Ubers as I did on alcohol, so it added up to around $59.
Also, two dates: one with the promising guy (he didn’t eat anything, so I paid for my own meal which was huge so $23ish after tip) and one ($20ish for drinks, tip and Uber) with a guy I had fun with but is only intermittently available.
Oh, and I’m going with a friend to a local production of her favorite musical Singing in the Rain. Which is a bit hilarious as she’s goth and listens to cyberpunk — but apparently also loves her some musicals. The ticket was through Goldstar but still $43.25.
So all in all, lots of value from this spending.
Welp, $50 over here, but this month I had to fill a prescription for $42.55. It’ll last me several months, but as an irregular expense it throws spending off. Also, I bought some N95 masks for $23.32.
The rest of the spending was more mundane: about $400 for my insurance, my monthly Adderall ($25.23), two $65 massages (ahhhh), $40 copay for my three-month check-in with my med management doctor and about $19 for new workout shoes.
But of course…
All of the above isn’t a comprehensive list of my spending for the month.
There’s my housing costs ($600 back to Mom plus $257.50 for eventual insurance premium and property tax payments), my Internet and another year of hosting for the blog ( both of which my business pays for) and some charitable contributions.
So my total spending for the month was $3,631.
I’m pretty satisfied with that amount. I’ll admit that that’s nowhere near as frugal as many people. But I’m not going for extreme frugality. I’m balancing securing the future and enjoying the present.
And I feel like my life is pretty indulgent. I get semi-monthly massages, and I go out to socialize about twice a week. Plus however many dates I want/can arrange. As a result, I feel like I allow myself an awful lot of luxury. So to find out that my spending still usually hovers around $3,500 to $4,000 a month… Well, it’s a pretty great feeling.
How did everyone else’s spending go this last month?
